DIRECTIONS:

TABLE RUNNER

  1. Finished size 16" x 60". Fabric tape will temporarily hold fabrics together. It is important to keep tape more than 1/8" from all folded edges of fabric. Sewing through the tape will gum needle.
  2. Cut two 5" W x 30" L sheer fabric.
  3. Splice for center of sheer fabric panels: Cut one 2" W x 10" L Home Dec fabric. Fold each 10" edge back 1/2" (to center). Press. Cut in half to two at 5" L. Place fabric tape centered on WS of both strips. Lay one strip, tape side up. Remove backing from tape. RSU place one short end of sheer fabric onto tape lining up end of sheer with center of fabric splice strip, center side to side. Repeat to attach second strip of sheer to opposite side of splice strip. Remove backing from tape on second 5" splice strip. WST place splice strip on top of first splice strip. Line up all edges of splice strips. Hand press in place.
  4. Wide bias tape to finish outer short ends of sheer: Cut one 3" W x 10" L. Fold each 10" edge back 1/2". Press. Fold WST at center. Press. Cut in half to two at 5" L. Open one bias tape strip at center fold. Place one strip of fabric tape down L of strip, on one side of center fold. Keep tape away from center fold of bias tape. Remove backing from tape. Place one short end of sheer on top of tape with 5" end lining up with center fold, centered from side to side. Fold over other side of bias to match with taped side. Hand press in place. Bias strip should stay closed around raw end of sheer. If necessary, add a second strip to opposite WS of bias tape and hand press. Repeat for opposite end of sheer. Topstitch 1/8" from edges of 5" of bias tape, on edge next to sheer, and both 5" edges of center splice. Set aside.
  5. Outer fabric panels: Cut 2 @ 13" x 61" from Home Dec fabric. Fold back 13" edges 1/2". Press. Fold back 61" edges 1/2". Press. Trim off a triangle of fabric under the ends of the 61" fold to reduce bulk. Keep cut 1/8" from short end fold. Repeat. Fold panel lengthwise in half WST. Press. Repeat.
  6. Fold outer panel in half lengthwise and mark center on side with 1/2" folds. Fold in half again and mark 1/4's on side with 1/2" folds. Repeat with second outer panel and sheer panel.
  7. Open one outer panel. Place fabric tape centered over raw edge of fabric on one 60" L and both 6" W ends. Start and stop tape 1/4" from corners of fabric. Remove the backing from the tape. Place one long raw edge of sheer panel on top of tape, along 60" edge, lining up raw edge of sheer with raw edge of home dec fabric. Match corners, quarter marks and center of sheer with marks on home dec fabric. Fold over side of fabric without tape to enclose all raw edges of fabric on one side of sheer strip. Match corners, quarter marks and centers. Stack folded edges to lay flush. Topstitch 1/8" from stacked edges of home dec fabric panel. Start and stop at intersections of bias tape and center splice. Repeat. Topstitch 1/8" from ends of table runner. Mark 2" in from both long sides of runner. Pin at marks. Topstitch along mark.

COVERED LAMPSHADE

  1. Remove any raised trim from lampshade. Make a paper pattern. Lay rolled paper on a flat surface. Lay lampshade on side, bottom seam 1/2" from bottom corner of paper. Mark the seam locations at the top and bottom of the shade onto the paper. Slowly roll and trace along the bottom and top edges of the lampshade onto the paper. Mark the end location when back to the seam. Connect the top and bottom seam lines. Add 1" to one end. Use a ruler to add 1/2" to the top and bottom curves. Cut out pattern.
  2. Press fabric. Transfer pattern to WS of fabric. For geometric patterns lay the pattern at an angle on the fabric. Cut fabric. Fold and press one short end back 1/2".
  3. Mask off center of frame with paper and tape to avoid overspray. In a spray area, spray lampshade with Loctite. Line up short raw end of fabric with lower section of seam. Center fabric between top and bottom frames. Fabric will lay past frames by 1/2". Press fabric from the center toward the frames. Press the fabric to lay flat at the wire frames. At the folded end an additional spray of adhesive may be necessary. Lay a piece of paper over fabric already secured to shade. Flip the folded end of fabric WSU on top of the paper. Lay another sheet of paper on the opposite side of the folded back fabric. This will expose only the WS of the folded fabric to the spray adhesive. Spray. Remove the paper and press the fabric in place. Let dry.
  4. Apply a small bead of Quick Grip to a small section of the top or bottom wire frame. Wrap the 1/2" raw edge of fabric around to the inside of the frame. Repeat for the opposite frame. Use trim scissors to clip into the raw edge of the fabric to wrap around the sides of the center framework.
  5. Add trim/fringe to the bottom edge of lampshade. Dry fit trim around edge of shade to determine the vertical placement of trim. Place a small bead of Quick Grip on shade just below top of height of trim. If necessary, place a light pencil line equidistant from the bottom edge of shade as a guide for adhesive location. Start at seam. Clean cut end of trim. Press in place a section at a time. When trim is within 1" of seam trim off excess length to end the trim right next to the start of trim. Let dry.

LARGE CANVAS

  1. Lay down your rectangular fabric piece with the correct side facing your work surface.
  2. Center and lay down your canvas with the back of the canvas facing you.
  3. In the middle of each of the longer sides, fold over and staple the fabric to the back wooden portion of the canvas. Pull slightly on the second side to make sure the fabric is taut.
  4. On the middle of each of the shorter sides, fold over and staple the fabric to the wooden frame. Pull slightly again on the second staple.
  5. Continue going around and around the canvas, stapling out toward the edges as you go. Remember to pull slightly on the fabric as you do.
  6. When you get to the edges, you will be doing a double-fold to make it look as clean as possible.
  7. The first fold into the corner should be 45 degrees from the edge then staple down. The second fold will cover the first and be 90 degrees from the edge (running along the edge of the canvas). Staple down.
  8. Continue to fold and staple all 4 edges. Trim off excess fabric behind the canvas.

MEDIUM CANVAS

  1. Use the same directions as the large canvas. Be careful to make sure the stripes are running straight and even as you staple.

HORIZONTAL STRIPE SMALL CANVAS

  1. Begin by using the large canvas directions to lay out the background fabric.
  2. On the 7"x 16" striped piece, fold under the edges approx. 3/8" and stitch down to create a clean edge on each long side.
  3. Place and pin the striped fabric where you would like it to fall and fold around the edges. Staple down on each side. Cut off excess fabric.

DIAGONAL SMALL CANVAS

  1. Begin by using the large canvas directions to lay out the background fabric.
  2. Lay out the 20" x 11" piece at a diagonal, approx. 2.5" from each edge and pin the top and bottom to the sides of the canvas to keep in place as you staple.
  3. Fold over and staple the top and bottom portions first, making sure the diagonal line stays straight and taut.
  4. Fold over the side edge and staple from the middle. Don't pull too much on this piece so the diagonal line of the fabric stays in place. Fold over the two corners and staple. Cut off except fabric on the back.

JOANN HACKS:

  • If you would like to use different sized canvases than shown, it's very easy to adapt. The rule of thumb is to cut a piece that has approx. 3-4" extra on each side than the canvas.
  • If you don't have a sewing machine for clean finishing the striped fabric on the small canvas, you can also iron and fold in the unfinished edges on each side. Make sure to pull nice and tight when stapling it down so the edges stay folded.
