SUPPLIES & TOOLS:

  • Sizes vary, supplies below for a 10" diameter bag, 12" high with 8" allowance for lining to fold over outside of bag
  • 1 yard outer fabric
  • 1 yard inner fabric
  • 1 yard extra thick interfacing, cut to 31"x 11.5"
  • Coordinating thread for all fabrics
  • Scissors
  • Sewing machine with walking foot
  • Compass
  • Fabric pen or pencil
  • Craft knife
  • 4 extra large eyelets
  • Eyelet anvil
  • Hammer
  • 24" rope

DIRECTIONS:

  1. Cut inner and outer fabric to 32.5"x 21.5" rectangles

  2. Using compass, mark a 10" circle on wrong side of of one remaining fabric remnants. Mark a small dot every few degrees as you rotate compass. Cut out circle, with approximately 1/2" seam allowance.

  3. Place inner and outer fabrics right sides to right side. Stitch top edge together, 1/2" seam allowance. Leave sides open.

  4. Reverse fabric, so right sides face out.

  5. Stitch an additional seam 12.5" from unhemmed (bottom) edge of fabric.

  6. Pin fabric circle to unhemmed edges of inner and outer fabric. Start at one corner, right side of fabric circle to right side of outer fabric. Line up edges of fabric, but pin along the circle drawn by compass. Rotate circle bit by bit until fabric is pinned into a cylinder.

  7. Stitch along pinned line.

  8. Insert interfacing into open ends of bottom channel. Interfacing should be just short of open ends, to avoid being stitched into vertical seam of cylinder.

  9. Stitch vertical seam to enclose interfacing and close cylinder. Use a straight stitch first, then follow-up with a zig-zap railroad tie stitch to close in fraying edge.

  10. Flip the cylinder, so the seams are inside.

  11. Fold over lining to outside of cylinder. Adjust height as desired.

  12. To add rope handles fold cylinder in half vertically, from vertical seam to front to opposite side of cylinder. Visually center eyelets, leaving about 4 inches between them. Mark center of each eyelet.

  13. Poke hold through inner and outer fabric and interfacing with and craft knife. Using scissors, widen hole so that eyelet fits through hole. Attach eyelets using eyelet anvil and hammer.

  14. Cut rope to (2) 12" lengths. Knot one end of one piece. Insert rope into eyelet so that knot is on the inside. Insert untied end into next eyelet. Knot loose end. Repeat for other handle.

JOANN HACKS:

  • Customize Dimensions
  • Use any online circumference calculator to adjust planter dimension. Enter desired finished diameter into calculator. Add an inch to the resulting circumference for seam allowance. This is the length of your fabric. Use any height desired, allowing for 1/2" top and bottom seams as needed.

  • Modified Design for Extra Thick Fabrics
  • If using a sweater knit or exceptionally thick fabric, structure can be modified for easier sewing. Use the same fabric for the inner and outer walls by cutting out one panel 32.5"x 25". Fold fabric in half lengthwise. Follow instructions as above, starting with attaching fabric circle to bottom (unfolded) edge of fabric.

  • Once cylinder is created, make a "sweater" wrap for cylinder. Use fabric of your choice. Cut to 32.5"x 16.5". Fold lengthwise, right side to right side. Stitch bottom edge together with 1/2" seam allowance. Flip fabric so seams are inside. Fold fabric so that open ends meet. Stitch together with 1/2" seam allowance. Use a straight stitch followed by zig-zag railroad tie stitch to close fraying edge of seam. Flip fabric again so seam is on inside.

  • Place "sweater" over cylinder. Add rope handles, if desired. Eyelets should go through both the sweater and the cylinder.

  • Color Blocking
  • Design can be modified to incorporate color blocking on either the outside or inside of the cylinder or extended lining. Simply piece together panels to the same dimensions as instructed above before constructing cylinder.

  • Handles
  • Handles are optional, but note the lining fold over height/sweater placement cannot be adjusted once handles are in place.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Cute pot bags; TERRIBLE instructions Thought I'd try making a couple of these, but the instructions were nearly indecipherable. Fortunately, I can reproduce the look without written instruction.
