Hooded Terry Poncho

SUPPLIES & TOOLS:

  • Terry Cloth: 2 yds
  • Thread (to match)
  • Plastic Snaps & Plastic Snap Setter OR Hook & Loop Tape
  • Scissors
  • Straight Pins
  • Sewing Machine
  • Pattern Template A

DIRECTIONS:

To find the downloadable template click on the "GET PATTERNS" tab.
  1. For the front of the poncho, cut one rectangle 28 1/2" wide by 26" long.
  2. For the back, cut one rectangle 38 1/2" wide x 26" long.
  3. For the hood, cut one Template A on fold.
  4. Sew the center back seam on the hood using a 3/4" seam allowance.
  5. Using a large zig-zag stitch, sew over the raw edge of the seam allowance.
  6. Along the front edge, fold under 1/2" and then fold under 3/4."
  7. Straight stitch 1/8" in from the first fold to create the hem.
  8. Fold the back piece in half along the 38 1/2" top edge and mark the center.
  9. With right sides together, pin the raw edge of the hood to the back, lining up the center mark with the center seam on the hood.
  10. Sew the hood to the back, using a 3/4" seam allowance.
  11. Zig-zag stitch the raw edges of the seam allowance.
  12. With right sides together, pin the front left shoulder to the back left shoulder.
  13. Sew them together using a 3/4" seam allowance.
  14. Zig-zag stitch the raw edges of the seam allowance.
  15. Along all of the remaining edges of the front and back, turn under 1/2" and then 3/4."
  16. Straight stitch 1/8" in from the first fold to create the hem.
  17. Evenly space 3 plastic snaps along the right shoulder.
  18. Alternately, apply hook and loop tape to right shoulder.

JOANN HACKS:

  • To size up or down, increase or decrease the desired amount along front and bottom edge of hood Template A.
  • Adjust the length and width of both the front and back rectangles to increase or decrease size.
