SUPPLIES & TOOLS:

  • White cotton or natural fiber napkins
  • Rit All-Purpose Powder Dye Scarlet Red
  • Rit All-Purpose Powder Dye Royal Blue
  • Two 32oz mason jars or other small containers
  • Stir stick
  • Gloves
  • 1/2 cup salt
  • Rit ColorStay Dye Fixative (optional)

DIRECTIONS:

  1. Gather supplies. Prewash napkins to remove any finishes that may interfere with dye absorption.
  2. Read & follow dye package instructions based on size of container to be dyed. If using 32oz mason jars, use 1 box of dye for each jar.
  3. Heat water to boiling and fill each jar 3/4 full. Stir well.
  4. Add 1/4 cup salt to each dye bath and stir until totally dissolved.
  5. Test the color of dye on a scrap cloth or piece of paper towel to ensure desired color. Items will look darker when wet and prior to washing.
  6. Roll wet napkin. Take the two sides of the napkin and fold them towards the middle, stopping at the middle. Then, starting at the bottom end, roll the napkin into a cylinder.
  7. Put on gloves, and dip one end of the napkin into the blue dye. The dye will creep up a bit. Don't dunk to desired finished level, but just below.
  8. Remove napkin from dye. Wash excess dye out into a sink using warm water. Be sure to clean sink DIRECTLY after or the dye will stain.
  9. Continue dip dying napkins in the dye until all are blue. Do the same thing with red dye on opposite end. Make sure to leave enough white space between the two colors.
  10. If desired, use Rit ColorStay Dye Fixative prior to washing to prevent bleeding.
  11. Wash napkins prior to use.
