Beginner 1-2 Hours
SUPPLIES & TOOLS:
  • White Polyester outdoor umbrella
  • Rit DyeMore in daffodil yellow
  • Stainless steel pot
  • Large plastic container
  • Metal spoon
  • Liquid dish detergent
  • Rubber gloves
  • Paper towels
  • Plastic table cover
  • Measuring spoon
  • Sewing machine & thread

DIRECTIONS:
  1. Cover table with plastic and gather your supplies.
  2. Prewash Outdoor Umbrella to remove any finishes that may interfere with dye absorption.
  3. Prior to dyeing this umbrella, the fringe trim was removed.
  4. Fill a large stainless steel pot with 3 gallons of water.
  5. Cover pot and heat until almost boiling. Water temperature should ideally be 200°F.
  6. When water begins to simmer, add a bottle of Rit DyeMore in Daffodil Yellow. Shake bottle before pouring. Stir well.
  7. Add 1 teaspoon of dish detergent to help promote level dyeing.
  8. Test dye color by dipping paper towel in the dyebath. If color is too light, add more dye; if color is too dark, add more water.
  9. Wearing rubber gloves, use the metal tongs to lower the umbrellain dyebath. The first 10 minutes are the most critical. Stirring helps to ensure an even color with no splotches.
  10. When desired color is achieved, remove from dyebath. Fabric will look darker when wet and will dry lighter. Squeeze out excess dye.
  11. Rinse in cool water until the water runs clear.
  12. Wash in warm water with a mild detergent, rinse and dry.
  13. Sew trim back onto the umbrella.
Rated 1 out of 5 by from Dying Umbrella as Dress and Tights The reason I was reading these instructions was to learn how I could dye my faded umbrella when the material is attached to the large metal structure. When the instructions get to that critical point, it turns into a dress and tights that you are dipping into a pot. Seriously?
