SUPPLIES & TOOLS:

  • Follow yardage on pattern envelope for vest
  • 24" metal zipper (Black or color to match fur choice) can be shortened according to size
  • Two 6" or 7" zipper (match color to front zipper)
  • 1/4 yd of black knit for pocket and armhole (scye) trim
  • Pocket lining 3/8 yd
  • Kraft paper
  • Pencil
  • Sewing notions

DIRECTIONS:

All seams are 5/8" unless stated.
Use vest as a base pattern.

    POCKETS
  1. Find where you would want placement of pockets. Cut 2 rectangles 5 3/4"x 8". Pocket lining cut 2 rectangles 8 1/2"x 3/8 yd.
  2. Because of the fur, mark with pins for the opening. The opening will be 6" finished. Because of the fur, you can sew a rectangle to the lining piece as a guide, then pin to the fur. Start stitching in the center of the long side (never start at a corner), sew over 1" opening then complete the rectangle.
  3. Cut through the center of rectangle, stopping 1/2" away from the corners.
  4. Cut diagonally all the way to the corners, turn the knit inside out. Slide knit (including the 1/4" seam allowance) from the rectangle to make a welt. By making the welts 1/4" each, it will allow the zipper teeth to show.
  5. Place zipper in the center of welts, baste welts, sew welts to the zipper tape.
  6. On the inside, fold pocket lining together. It may not line up perfectly, as the lining will be coming over the top of the zipper.
  7. To adjust, cut off any excess, serge or zig zag together closed.
  8. On the right side, sew and attach pocket to fur fabric for decoration and stability.

  9. COLLAR
  10. From the base pattern, draw a straight line from the center front seam allowance past the neckline. Drop center front neckline 1" from new center front neckline. Measure the length of neckline. Make a pattern out of Kraft paper the length of neckline plus seam allowance x 5" high. The collar will finish 2 1/2" but looks larger because of the fur. Serge or zig zag center front of vest. Sew collar right side to right side to neckline. Sew zipper to center front of vest and into half of collar. Fold over the other half collar, tucking in zipper tape at the top.
  11. Sew down collar to wrong side of fur either by hand or stitching on the sewing machine. If the machine mows down the fur, it can be fluffed back up with a large headed straight pin.
  12. Straight stitch a 1/4" top stitching stitch up the length of zipper through the collar pulling the fur away from the zipper to keep it from getting caught in the zipper teeth.

  13. Armhole (scye) knit trim: Cut two strips of knit the length of armhole (scye) plus seam allowance x 3 1/4".
  14. Fold in half, pin to armhole (scye). Sew a 5/8" seam allowance, then serge or zig zag to finish seams. Sew side seams closed including knit trim. Hem vest.
