  • 1/8yd black cotton duck canvas
  • 1/4" elastic

  • Small safety pin

DIRECTIONS:
  1. Download the pattern by clicking “download PDF” below Print Description on the right.
  2. Cut 1 of pattern out of Canvas. Cut 2 of pattern out of Cotton fabric. Cut 1 of the pattern on the fold of cotton fabric, aligning the fold with the dashed line.
  3. The canvas and cotton piece cut on the fold will be the center of the mask, outside and in. The 2 pieces cut straight from the cotton fabric will be the top and bottom of the mask.
  4. Match 1 cotton piece (top) with the canvas piece right sides together, and sew one of the outer curved edges using 1/4" seam allowance.
  5. Match remaining cotton piece (bottom) with folded piece, right sides together, and sew along matched curved edge using 1/3" SA.
  6. Open both sewn pieces. Match center canvas piece to the cotton piece (bottom) sewn to the folded piece, and the folded cotton piece to the cotton piece(top) sewn to the canvas piece. Sew again along the remaining curved edges with 1/4" seam allowance. The side with the folded edge should only be caught in the seam about 1" along on each side
  7. Match seams together at side, with the canvas and folded piece aligned in the center, and pin. Insert ties into the center section of the mask along the seam. Sew the side seams with 1/4" seam allowance.
  8. Turn mask right side out.
  9. Turn seam allowance from top flap under 1/4" and edge stitch to close the opening.
  10. Fold top and bottom edge in along the curved seam and press.
  11. Top stitch around the entire mask using 1/8" seam allowance.
  12. Thread elastic through the bottom casing on one side using a small safety pin. Continue threading through the top of the other side of the mask until you meet back up with the other end of the elastic.
  13. Connect the elastic with a zigzag stitch, making sure that elastic is not twisted. Move the stitch part of the elastic into the casing for comfort.
  14. Draw out your rough design lightly with light pencil or disappearing marker onto the canvas mask.
  15. Using a satin stitch for nose and backstitch for mouth/whiskers, embroider design onto mask.

JOANN HACKS:
  • Make a pattern for the filter by reducing the mask pattern by 1/2" on all side.
  • Adding the embroidery on the mask before attaching the back piece hides all your stitching knots and makes mask cleaner-looking.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from prints too small The pattern looks good, but it prints out smaller than the inch scale on the side. I tried twice and got different, but small, sizes each time.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Love the idea! The fold is at the center. Most patterns have this marked with a curved arrow pointing to the edge on the fold.
