Intermediate Weekend Project

SUPPLIES & TOOLS:

  • 3 wood embroidery hoops: 16", 14", 12"
  • Metallic silver acrylic paint
  • Medium paintbrush
  • Assorted trims: black fringe, white fringe, gray short, white twisted
  • Quick Grip glue
  • Pliers
  • 3 yds medium-weight jewelry chain
  • Pendant light kit
  • 9 hooks
  • 20" piece of scrap paper for tracing the largest circle
  • Pencil
  • Protractor
  • Staple gun
  • Small jar of paintable wood filler
  • Small piece of sandpaper
  • 3 tacks

DIRECTIONS:

  1. On the large piece of paper, trace the inside of the largest hoop. Find the center of the circle and make a dot. With your pencil draw a straight vertical line down the middle of the circle. Lay your protractor on the line and move the arm to the left 120 degrees and make a mark. Turn the arm to the right 120 degrees past center line and make a mark. With your straight edge, continue the lines until they hit the outside circle. This is your template where you will be attaching the chains on all of the hoops.
  2. Decide which trim you want on which hoop. You may want to use the longest trim on the largest hoop.
  3. Take the hoops apart and glue fringe onto the inside largest hoop on the outside of that inside hoop. After gluing the trim onto the hoop, run another beading of glue on top of the trim and reassemble the outside hoop onto the inside hoop with the trim on it. Tighten the two hoops and let them dry. Repeat this step with the additional hoops.
  4. Once the hoops have dried overnight, unscrew them by removing the bolts. Use pliers to tear off the hardware and tightening system.
  5. Use wood filler to fill in the holes and the gap in the wood. Let it dry.
  6. Once it has dried, lightly sand it smooth.
  7. Paint the hoop with the silver paint inside and outside of the hoop and let it dry.
  8. Repeat steps 3-7 on the other hoops to apply the trim.
  9. To assemble: you will be attaching one hoop to another starting from the bottom. Lay the smallest hoop on the paper diagram. Make a mark in three places following your marks on the paper on the inside of the hoop to staple on the hooks. Staple the 3 hooks facing upward for the hoop above.
  10. Attach the chain to the hooks and figure out how many links you want the bottom hoop to hang from the one above. Count the links. With your wire cutters snip the length of the chain that you want. You will need 3 chains for each hoop. Attach the chains to the hooks stapled on the smallest hoop.
  11. Attach hooks at the end of each chain.
  12. Repeat step 9-11 for the middle-sized hoop and then the largest hoop.
  13. Use three additional hooks and staple them to the top rim of the largest hoop at the same marks.
  14. Attach chain to the hooks to measure to the middle of the template dot.
  15. Use your wire cutters to snip the chains.
  16. Use your pliers to open up the last link of each chain and attach them to the key ring.
  17. Put a dab of glue and then the tacks in between the largest top hoops at the chains to cover the staples. Use your silver acrylic paint to paint the tacks to match the silver hoops for a finished look.
  18. Attach the lighting pendant kit to the middle keychain.

JOANN Hacks:

  • Always work on a level flat surface.
  • Use the longest trims on the top hoop and the bottom hoop.
  • Make sure the chains are long enough so that you can see each trim well and they aren't hidden by the hoop above.
