DIRECTIONS:
Approximate quilt size: 36""x48""

Quilt
Note: It is intended that the patterns and instructions are for guidance rather than step-by-step instructions for each part. The patterns are included as a starting point and can be made taller, shorter, narrower or wider as you see fit. This is recommended for an experienced quilter with applique experience.
  1. To print the patterns, click on the ""Download Project PDF"" button (above).
  2. Enlarge quilt pattern to 36""x48"" at an office supply store.
  3. Cut out the background fabrics following the lines on the pattern. The background fabrics include the sky, the gray print, the water, and the light and dark green prints. Add seam allowances all around on each of the pieces.
  4. Sew the background fabrics together and press the seam allowances toward the darker fabrics.
  5. Cut the interfacing in half and fuse the two pieces side-by-side on the back of the white print fabric.
  6. Cut the length of HeatnBond Lite in half. Tape the two pieces side-by-side to the back of the big quilt pattern with the paper side of the HeatnBond facing outwards. Tape the pattern (HeatnBond side toward you) on a large window or face down on the light box. Follow the lines on the pattern and draw the road on to the HeatnBond. TIP: Where the two pieces of HeatnBond meet on the road drawing tape the pieces together. The road will be cut out and needs to remain in one piece.
  7. Leaving about 1/2"" outside of the road drawing all around, cut out the road.
  8. Place the HeatnBond road adhesive side down on the interfacing side of the white print fabric. TIP: The road design on the HeatnBond is quite “floppy” at this point so the best way to handle it is to layout the whole piece of white fabric and work on it as a whole rather than in parts on an ironing board. Place the cotton blanket on the work surface, place the white fabric print side down on the blanket and the HeatnBond road adhesive side down on the fabric. Fuse in place.
  9. Cut out the road on the drawn line.
  10. Lay the quilt background out face up and place the road face up on the background (keep the paper backing on). Using the water erasable marker, draw all around the road. Put the road aside for now. TIP: This enables you to see where the road will be and allows you to sew the appliques before sewing on the road.
  11. Use the patterns provided as a guide for all the applique pieces. You can make them taller, shorter, wider and narrower plus add your own details. It is recommended to work in one area at a time (like homes or city, etc) to make and sew on the appliques. A zig zag stitch as well as the tighter satin stitch were used on most of the appliques with a free motion straight stitch around the trees. Use the tear away stabilizer under all the applique pieces including the road when sewing to avoid puckering the fabric. Tear the stabilizer away when finished. Add details like windows and door as you see fit. The traffic lights are a simple rectangle with the permanent markers for the light colors. Where some appliques overlap the road wait until the road is sewn on before sewing on those appliques.
  12. Applique on the road then finish with the appliques that overlap the road. TIP: Use a straight stitch very close to the edge of the road to secure the road then satin stitch the road and the road lines.
  13. Trim to straighten the edges of the quilt then sandwich and machine quilt. Tip: Quilt around the road and other appliques so the designs stand out. Quilt other areas as needed to secure the layers.
  14. Make binding and bind the quilt with your favorite method.

Stuffed Toys
Camper
  1. Use the provided pattern to cut two campers out of the red fabric. Trace on HeatnBond; one for the rectangular window, the round window and the door. Fuse to the back of the white print with the interfacing and cut out. Fuse the windows and door to the camper. Cut an additional fabric for the window curtains using the rectangular window pattern, cutting it in half and folding each half in half right side out then basting to the sides of the rectangular window. Satin stitch the pieces in place. Don’t forget the tear away stabilizer. With right sides together sew the back to the front with a 1/3"" seam allowance. Turn right side out and lightly stuff the camper. Sew the opening closed.
  2. On the wrong side of the wheel fabric, draw two of the wheel circles. Pin the circles right sides together to another piece of the same fabric. Sew around the two marked circles with a short stitch length leaving no opening. Cut the two sewn circles out leaving a 1/8"" seam allowance. Make a snip in the center of one side of the wheel circle, turn the wheel inside out and lightly stuff the wheel. Repeat with the other wheel. Sew the wheels to the camper with a black button in the center of each wheel to give it dimension.
  3. Space Ship
  4. Cut two 5""x5"" pieces of the nose cone fabric and two 5""x8"" pieces of the body fabric. Sew one nose cone fabric to one body fabric along a 5"" side. Repeat. Lay the pattern on the sewn fabrics with the seamline matching up to the seamline on the pattern. Cut out 1/4"" larger than the pattern all around. Trace two of the round windows on the HeatnBond and fuse to the interfacing side of the white fabric. Cut out the circles. Fuse the windows in place on the spaceship body and satin stitch all around. Cut a 6-1/2""x6-1/2"" square on the bias out of the yellow fabric. Fold the yellow square in half wrong sides together and pin a narrow end of the yellow on the end of the space ship. Place the spaceship pieces right sides together with the yellow inside. Sew the spaceship together leaving a small opening for turning. Turn and stuff the space ship. Sew opening
