DIRECTIONS:

  1. To print the patterns, click on the "Download Project PDF" button (above).
  2. Cut two pieces of fleece, one outer fabric, one liner fabric, to 36" wide x 45" high. Fold each piece in half on the 45" then in half again on the 36". The center of the poncho will be at the double fold point. Use a marker to transfer the 1/4 neck curve, line up the straight lines of the pattern with the folded edges of fabric. Cut this curve to create the neck hole. On the front center fold of both panels, 22 1/2" H panel, cut 4" down from the neck hole. This is the location of the button strap. Fold the edges of the cut back 1/2" and taper to the end of the cut. Pin in place. Set aside.
  3. Cut out one fleece liner fabric and one fleece outer fabric hood back and hood side.
  4. Cut out ears, 2 outer fleece and 2 liner fleece. Place RST and stitch 1/4" SA. Notch around the curves. Turn RSO. Topstitch 1/4" from edge. On the outer fleece side sew a dart from the lower center of the ears at 1/4" wide and taper off at 5" up the ears. Locate the ears 2" away from the center of the side panel back lining up the raw edges. Lay the ears lining side facing the front on the hood. Sew 1/4" from the raw edges.
  5. Pin the outer fabric back of hood to the side panel with the face, RST. Line up the centers and the ends first and ease around the curves. Sew 1/2" SA. Trim to 1/4".
  6. Repeat for the lining of the hood.
  7. RST pin front edges of inner and outer hoods matching centers and ends. Sew 1/2" SA. Turn RSO. Sew 1/2" topstitch.
  8. Match up lower raw edges of hood and sew 1/4" SA.
  9. Attach hood to poncho: Turn hood inside out and line up the centers of the back of the liner poncho neck hole with liner of hood RST. Front ends of hood line up with folded V-cut in poncho. Sew 1/2" SA.
  10. Pin outer fleece of poncho RST with outer hood same as above. All raw edges around neck will be visible. Sew 1/2" SA. Turn the poncho RSO.
  11. Line up outer raw edges of the poncho. Fold edges under 1/2" and topstitch 1/4" SA.
  12. Cut the strap for the button. Fold in half lengthwise. Fold under the side raw edges 1/2" and sew around the edges 1/4". Sew a buttonhole 1" from the folded end. Place the raw end of the strap 1/2" in between the outer and liner fabrics 1" from the top of the neck v cut. Topstitch from the hood down the neck cut and back to the hood.
  13. Pull the strap across to the opposite side of the V to locate the desired position of the button. Hand sew button in place.
  14. Attach snaps to create sleeve effect. Place one on each side of the poncho, 16" up from the bottom edge and 2" in from the sides. Follow the manufacturer's directions to attach.

JOANN Hacks:

  • Use the eraser end of a pencil to completely push out the tips of the ears when turned RSO.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Child's Car Seat Poncho This would be a great project, I would love to make it. Unfortunately, the download button does not appear. I need that to do the hood
