Intermediate Weekend Project

SUPPLIES & TOOLS:

  • 1 1/2 yds flannel backing fabric
  • 1 yd flannel for binding
  • 2 yds muslin fabric
  • 1 yd each 5 flannel fabrics
  • Sewing machine with walking foot
  • Basic sewing supplies

DIRECTIONS:

  1. Cut two 35"x35" squares out of muslin, (9) 6" x full width of fabric rectangles of flannel for each muslin square, enough 2" wide bias to create 210" for binding (1/2" seam allowance included).
  2. Sew 6" strips of flannel diagonally across muslin squares. Sew each new piece right-side together with the long edge of the previously added piece, through all layers. Press each new piece toward the opposite corner. Repeat until each muslin square is covered. Some piecing may be required to cover diagonal of square.
  3. Sew muslin squares right-side together, being sure to match stripes so they chevron in the middle. Trim excess seam allowance and press seam to one side.
  4. Lay pieced portion to flannel backing, wrong-sides together. Quilt in the ditch of each seam to attach pieced section to backing. Press well.
  5. Sew binding to outer edge of quilt, right-sides together, being sure to miter corners. Fold binding to backing of quilt and fold under unsewn edge 1/2". Hand-stitch this edge in place.
