Join with sc—Place a slip knot on hook, insert hook in indicated stitch, yarn over and draw up a loop, yarn over and draw through both loops on hook.

Notes
- Hat is worked back and forth in rows, then seamed. Elephant pieces are worked separately and sewn to hat._x000B_
- Trunk and whites of eyes are worked in continuous rounds (spirals). You may find it helpful to place a marker on first stitch of each round of trunk._x000B_

Ear (make 4 - 2 each in A and B)
Ch 12. Row 1 (right side): Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across, turn—11 sc. Row 2: Ch 1, 2 sc in each sc, turn—22 sc. Rows 3–5: Ch 1, sc in each sc, turn. Row 6: Ch 1, sc2tog, sc in each sc to last 2 sc, sc2tog, turn—20 sc. Rows 7–10: Repeat Rows 5 and 6 twice— 16 sc. Rows 11–13: Repeat Row 6 three times— 10 sc. Fasten off. Round 14: With right sides facing, hold 2 ears (1 each of A and B) together, working through both thicknesses and across opposite side of foundation ch, join A with sc in first ch of Row 1, 2 sc in same ch as join, sc in each ch to last ch, 3 sc in last ch; sc evenly across ends of rows of first side to Row 13; 3 sc in first st of Row 13, sc in each st to last st, 3 sc in last st; sc evenly across ends of rows of 2nd side; join with slip st in first sc. Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing.
FINISHING
Weave tail through stitches of last row of hat and pull gently but firmly to close. Sew edges of rows together to seam back of hat. Stuff trunk with fiberfill so that trunk turns upward. Using photograph as a guide, position top of trunk on front of hat and sew trunk in place. Sew tongue into curve of mouth. Sew straight edge of mouth (across ends of rows) under trunk. Sew iris to white of eye. With tail of C, sew 1 small straight stitch on iris. Sew eyes on crown on either side of trunk. Top knot fringe: Cut 2 or 3 lengths of A, each 6-8” (15-20.5 cm) long. Thread through top of crown and tie in place. Brush to fluff and trim to desired length. Using photograph as a guide, position and sew ears to sides of crown. Weave in ends.
