SUPPLIES & TOOLS:
  • Cotton Fabric – at least 12”X9”
  • Lightweight Fusible Interfacing 12” X9”
  • 1/4” Elastic
  • Basic Sewing Supplies

DIRECTIONS:
  1. Download the pattern by clicking “download PDF” below Print Description on the right.
  2. Cut 1 pattern piece, on the fold, out of the cotton fabric and lightweight interfacing
  3. Apply fusible interfacing to wrong side of cotton fabric using an iron.
  4. Fold fabric right sides together, matching 9-inch (8-inch) sides.
  5. Sew along the 9 (8) inch side, using 1/4” seam allowance and leaving a space 3” wide in the center to turn mask right side out.
  6. Cut 2 pieces of elastic 7 inches long. Insert into the corners of the two open ends of the mask and pin into place. Sew across sides, backstitching well over the elastic, to secure the elastic in place.
  7. Turn mask right side out and press seams flat.
  8. Using pattern as a guide, fold up 3 pleats on each side, making sure the pleats are folded in the same direction. Pin into place.
  9. Top stitch around the entire mask, securing the pleats and closing the opening.

JOANN HACKS:
  • Substitute elastic with 4- 16” Fabric Ties at each corner.
  • Any light-medium weight, non-woven interfacing is appropriate for this project.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from It's October and still making mask. I bought a sewing machine to fix my work shorts every time they got a rip soI didn't have to throw them out. I have a lawn service business. When I found out patches were much easier the machine sat there so when mask were on demand I taught myself how to sew. I have come to the conclusion that if the task is hard women do the job because sewing isn't easy. Example sewing, birthing babies, running a household you women get it that was for the men out there. When I go into Joannes I am lost but the women that work either feel sorry for me or see the stupid look on my face and know I need help. They are the greatest because I know I ask some stupid questions. This was the first mask I learned how to do and was grateful for the video. Every pattern I have used ofcourse the size was and issue but you have to think who you are making the mask for. Heavier people have rounder face so has to be bigger, Men with beards and heavy I went to 14 to 16 inches long. My niece an adult 40 year Mom had to make a childs for her. I asked everyone to measure from the center of their nose to the beginning of their ear and that worked very well in case any of you women want a tip from a guy.. LOL Thanks to Joanns staff as well because of your people it's the only place I go.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great pattern, durable and adaptable I've made 50+ masks with this pattern thus far. The Child mask size is best for women if you add 1/2" to the width and should be labeled "Small Adult". The Adult mask size works well for men. I wash all fabrics first to make sure the mask doesn't shrink when I wash them (I wash masks after a full day of use or a week of minimal daily use).

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good design Found the pleat directions a bit confusing at first, but once I figured it out, made 50 of them and sent to two relatives who are nurses at Westchester (NY) Medical Center, where they were using them at the height of the pandemic.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from great video directions I do not sew and was able to make my first one in an hour. Made 2 more after and they took 30 minutes. My second and third mask I added wire ties that Dillions puts on the leaf lettuce for nose clips at the opening you use to turn the mask right side out. Sewed it on both vertical edges of the wire and right below so it would stay in place. The 7 inches of elastic was ok for my son with a short beard, my clean shaved husband liked 6 and me and my daughter found 5.5 comfortable. Video directions were easy to understand and follow.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great mask-easy to make I work for a home health agency and when the pandemic started we could not get any masks! We managed to provide each nurse with 1 N95 mask and then they were to use a cloth mask to cover and I started making lots of masks. I like this mask because it covers the nose and mouth and fits snugly. I made it a little larger nose to chin for my husband and increased the length of the earloops to 7.5 inches. I found using clips to hold the pleats before sewing saves a lot of time and I can add some wire for the nose by sewing a little pocket at the opening at the top where you turn it right side out. I have made some other patterns but this one is my favorite.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Pleats should always Face Down! Make sure to wear your mask with the pleats facing downwards!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from So bulky Really bulky around the edges and I used a lightweight fabric and lightweight interfacing... disappointed as I only had a small 1/2 fat quarter of my chosen fabric so I feel it has been wasted on an ill-fitting mask.
