SUPPLIES & TOOLS:

  • 100% cotton fabric for mask, ties & bunting flags
  • Pattern template (download PDF under print description above)
  • Basic sewing supplies

DIRECTIONS:

  1. Download the pattern by clicking “download PDF" below Print Description on the right.
  2. Cut out patterns using cutting directions on the pattern
  3. Seam allowance is 1/4" unless stated otherwise.
  4. For the ties, cut strips 1 1/2"x 40" long. Fold strip in half long ways and press. Fold raw edges in toward center fold and press again. Set aside.
  5. Match outer mask pieces right sides together, and sew the outer curve. Repeat with lining pieces.
  6. Open both mask halves and press both seam allowances to the right.
  7. Topstitch down the seam allowance, about 1/4" from the seam.
  8. Match front and back pieces right sides together, nesting center front seams.
  9. Sew across mask sides.
  10. Turn mask right side out and press.
  11. To make bunting flags, stitch triangle pattern pieces using 1/4" seam allowance, pivoting at the corner and leaving the top open. Carefully clip across the corner and turn right sides out, press. You will need about 10 flags for the mask.
  12. Pin flags along the top edge of the mask. Reserve two flags to extend past the mask.
  13. Center the folded tie and pin across the top edge of the mask folding over the edges. Pin one of the reserved flags into the tie at the edge of the mask.
  14. Topstitch along the edge of the tie to close tie, and catch the bunting flags across the top of the mask.
  15. Center the other tie along the bottom of the mask and sew.
  16. Finish ties by folding twice and tacking into place or knotting ends.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Simple project adjusted with elastic. The patterns run a little small so I size up on each one. I used this pattern to make a shark mask for my nephew for his quarantine birthday. He loved it! I’ve also simplified it to just make regular masks for the kids for school.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Adorable but time-consuming to make This is very cute but cannot be make in 1 hour unless it means the final assembly (after cutting all pieces, folding the ties, making and turning the flags). I made two and it took the better part of 3 days.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Doesn't fit well if modified to use elastic I made the small adult size and tried to modify it by using elastic the sides of the mask, to go around ears. The mask slides down my face exposing my nose. And if I keep it up it fogs up my eyeglasses, which I was hoping this formed mask would help. It might be OK using the ties behind your head, but those are harder to use.
