  5. Fuse all the layers of eye together as per fusible web manufacturer's directions.
  6. Adhere one sticky side of fusible web to the back of the eye. Set aside.
  7. Cut all fur and lining parts. The face front and back fur will point down. The ears fur will point up. Side and bottom panels fur will point down. Pocket fur will point down. Cut all fur from the back using small snips of the scissors. This will ensure that the length of the fur is left intact. On the shorter front fur panel cut the lower edge of fur blunt to the edge of the backing. This edge will be inside of the front pocket.
  8. Sew fur and lining back panels together then fur and lining front panels together WST 1/4" from edges. The front panel will be different from the back. The fur on the front panel will extend 1/2" past the location for the seam to attach the front pocket.
  9. Sew the 14" zipper to the pocket: Lining, fold over 1/4" and press the straight lengths. Pin the folded edges on the right side of the zipper, center the zipper on the panels. Zipper pull on the left. Sew to the zipper. Pin the darts on the front side. Sew, trim and zig zag stitch. On the upper raw edge, fur side, of the lower pocket pin the teeth, top edge, centered. Sew close to the edge. Cut two 18" lengths of ribbon. Lay the zipper edge of the fur pocket parts centered on the ribbon and sew 1/2" from edge of ribbon. Center the ribbon on top of the lining on the zipper and sew close to the zipper teeth. Pin and sew the darts on the back of the fur. Trim. Line up the raw edges of the lining and fur panels of the pocket and sew together 1/4" from edges. Zig zag along the top edge of the pocket.
  10. Pocket to front panel: Lay the pocket on top of the front fur panel RST. Line up the raw edge top of the pocket with the lower straight edge of the front fur panel. Pin and sew 1/2" from edges. This seam will be inside the top of the pocket. Fold the pocket down into the final position. Line up the outer raw edges of the pocket with the front lining. Pin and sew 1/4" from edges.
  11. Attach the eye: Lay the front panel on ironing board. Locate the approximate center of the fur front panel above the pocket. Hand brush the fur out from the center. Lay the eye in the spot. To hold this location press pins to stand around the circle of the eye. Remove the eye to take off the backing of the fusible web. Fuse the eye in place. Zig zag stitch around the perimeter of the eye to secure to the fur and lining.
  12. Ears: Lay a front and back of ear RST. Lay one piece of felt on top. Pin and sew 1/4" SA leaving the bottom edge open for turning. Trim the top point and turn RSO. Sew the bottom edge closed 1/4" from edge. Repeat. Lay ears with raw edges matching the outer raw edges of the front panel. The ears will be laying on the face of the front. Sew to the front 1/4" from edges.
  13. Back panel straps: Cut 1" cord, 2 @ 10" for part A, 2 @ 20" cord for part B. Follow manufacturer's directions for attaching Parachute Buckles. Pin the raw ends of part A straps, RSO, on either side of the top of the back panel. See pattern locations. Extend the ends ¾" past the raw edges. Pin the raw ends of the part B straps, RSO, on either side of bottom of the back panel. Extend the ends 3/4" past the raw edges. Sew in place 1/4" from edges.
  14. Side, bottom and top panels: Cut two pieces of ribbon to 16" long. Sew to the thin top strips of fur. Center the fur on the ribbon. Sew the ribbon to the zipper as close as possible to the teeth of the zipper. Sew one lining panel to the wrong side of each of the side/bottom fur panels 1/4" from edges. Lay one top short end of side/bottom panel to either end of the top zipper panel RST. Sew 1/2" SA. Pin the bottom short side of the side/bottom panels RST. Sew 1/2" SA. This will create a loop.
  15. Sides to front and back: With RST pin the zipper loop to the front panel. Line up the center bottom of the front panel with the seam at the bottom of the side/bottom panel. Find the center of the zipper and line up with the center of the top of the front panel. Sew together with a 1/2" SA. Trim and sew a zig zag to secure. Open the zipper 3/4". Repeat to line up and sew on the back panel. Turn RS

Craft Hack Tips and Tricks:

  • When sewing fur take time to tuck all the hairs away from any seam prior to sewing. If hairs are tucked into seams they may be pulled out, when finished sewing, by gently brushing with a fine tooth comb.
  • A loop of cording to hang the backpack may be added to the center of the top of the back panel at the same time as the straps are added.
