Cat Quilt

SUPPLIES & TOOLS:

  • 36" x 36" square of flannel for backing fabric
  • 36" x 36" quilt batting
  • 1/2 yd flannel for binding
  • 1/2 yd each 4 flannel fabrics (red, yellow, blue, green)
  • Sewing machine with walking foot
  • Basic sewing supplies
  • Ruler
  • Rotary Cutter
  • Iron
  • Quilt square template (instructions involve making 4 quilt squares)

DIRECTIONS:(Finished size is 35" x 35")

  1. Following template as a layout guide: cut 6 red, 4 yellow, 4 blue and 2 green 5" squares.
  2. Lay squares right-sides together in paired sets: (4) blue and red, (2) red and yellow, (2) yellow and green. Mark diagonal line in center of squares, then sew 1/8" on each side of line. Cut between lines and press seam to one side. Repeat for all squares.
  3. Using template as a guide, sew each portion of square in horizontal strips, right-sides together (1/4" seam allowance). Press seams to one side. Repeat for all four rows.
  4. Sew all blocks right-sides together (1/4" seam allowance) and press seams to one side.
  5. Sandwich batting between quilt topper and backing fabric. Pin into place well to avoid shifting. Stitch in the ditch of all horizontal seams to quilt all three pieces together. Baste around all four edges and trim off extra fabric.
  6. Cut 150" of 2" bias (this will require piecing). Align bias to edges of quilt (right-sides together), matching raw edges. Stitch 1/2" from edge, stopping to miter corners. Fold bias over to wrong-side and fold over unfinished edge of binding 1/2" to finish. Hand sew folded edge to quilt backing.
