Double pointed knitting needles size 13 (9 mm) set of 5
Extra-large pom-pom maker
GAUGE
12 sts = about 4 in. (10 cm) over knit 1, purl 1 worked in the round.
BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE.
NOTE
Hat is worked in one piece in the round on double pointed knitting needles. If you prefer, you can work the hat on a 16 in. (40.5 cm) long circular needle, then change to double pointed needles to work the last few rounds.
HAT
Cast 52 sts onto 4 of the double pointed needles – with 13 sts on each needle.
Place marker for beginning of rnd and join by knitting the first st on the left hand needle with the working yarn from the right hand needle and being careful not to twist the sts.
Rnd 1: *Knit 1, purl 1; repeat from * around.
Repeat Rnd 1, always slipping the marker as you come to it, until Hat measures about 10 1/2 in. (26.5 cm) from beginning.
Decrease for top of Hat
Next Rnd: * Slip next 2 sts as if to knit, one at a time, to right hand needle; insert left hand needle into fronts of these 2 sts and knit them together, purl the next 2 sts together; repeat from * around – you’ll have 26 sts at the end of this rnd.
Next Rnd: *Knit 1, purl 1; repeat from * around.
Next Rnd: * Slip next 2 sts as if to knit, one at a time, to right hand needle; insert left hand needle into fronts of these 2 sts and knit them together; repeat from * around – you’ll have 13 sts.
Cut yarn, leaving a long yarn tail. Thread yarn tail into blunt needle and then weave through the sts of the last rnd.
Pull to close top of Hat and knot yarn.
FINISHING
Pom-Pom
Following package directions, make a pom-pom. Tie pom-pom to top of Hat.
Weave in yarn ends.
