DIRECTIONS:

Note: this design is for experienced quilters
    1/4" seam allowance used throughout
  1. Cut the six 1/6 yd prints into two 2 3/4" x WOF strips. From the strips, cut eleven 2 3/4" x 5 1/4" pieces. There will be some fabric leftover from the strips. Place the sixty six rectangles into thirty three pairs, right sides together and cut in half diagonally from one corner to the opposite corner. Keep the resulting triangles in pairs making sixty-six elongated triangle pairs with right sides together.
  2. Cut the background fabric into eight 2 3/4" x WOF strips. From the strips, cut sixty-eight 2 3/4" x 5 1/4" pieces. Set two of the rectangles aside. Place the sixty-six rectangles into thirty-three pairs, right sides together and cut in half diagonally from one corner to the opposite corner. Keep the resulting triangles in pairs with right sides together. Keep the resulting triangles in pairs making sixty-six elongated triangle pairs with right sides together.
  3. Cut the background fabric into two 4 1/2" x WOF strips. From the strips, cut six 4 1/2" X 4 1/2" squares and leave the rest in long 4 1/2" wide strips for use later.
  4. To make the triangle blocks, use a pair of background elongated triangles and a pair of elongated print triangles. To print the templates, click on the "Download Project PDF" button (above). Following illustrations A, B and C sew the pieces together with a 1/4" seam allowance. Press after each seam is sewn. Make sixty-four sets, reserving the extra pieces for the next step.
  5. Use the two leftover 2 3/4" x 5 1/4" rectangles and the leftover elongated triangles of choice to make two half blocks like illustration D.
  6. To assemble the quilt, start at the top left corner of the design and place two triangle blocks together and angle them diagonally. The next row down has four blocks, one of which is a half block. Keep laying out the diagonal rows following the quilt design adding the 4 1/2" x 4 1/2" background squares as indicated on the design. Arrange the colors so they are evenly distributed throughout the quilt making a balanced arrangement.
  7. Sew the blocks together in each row. At the end of rows six through nine, add the 4 1/2" strips to fill out the width of the rows. Press.
  8. Sew the rows together. Press.
  9. Cut the selvedge off the sides of the background fabric. Lay one long side along the bottom row of the block design right sides together. Sew along the long seam. Press.
  10. Trim the quilt top to the rectangular shape and use the portion of the cut off part to make the 2 1/2" wide strips for the binding. Sew the 2 1/2" strips together end to end to make binding about 16 feet long.
  11. Mark the quilt for quilting as desired. Sandwich the backing, batting and top and pin together with the curved safety pins.
  12. Using the invisible thread, quilt the top as desired.
  13. Trim and bind the quilt.

Craft Hack Tips and Tricks:

  • Pressing seams open helps control the bulk where the points of the triangles come together.
  • Trim the individual blocks to square them up as needed. The blocks will be 4 1/2" x 4 1/2" when completed.
