3 shells = about 8 1/2 in. (21.5 cm); 6 rows = 4 1/2 in. (11.5 cm) over Rows 2 and 3 of Front.

STITCH EXPLANATIONS:
half-shell Work 3 dc in indicated st.
sc2tog (single crochet 2 sts together) (Insert hook in next st and draw up a loop) twice, yarn over and draw through all 3 loops on hook - 1 st decreased.
shell Work 5 dc in indicated st.

NOTES:
Cocoon is worked in 2 separate pieces: Front and Back.
Front and Back are crocheted together to join, then an edging is worked around the top edge of the Cocoon.
Tail is worked onto the lower end of the Cocoon.

Row 1 (RS): Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across - you will have 37 (43) sc in this row.
Row 2: Ch 3 (counts as dc), turn, 2 dc in first st (first half-shell made), sk next 2 sts, sc in next st, *sk next 2 sts, shell in next st, sk next 2 sts, sc in next st; rep from * to last 3 sts, sk next 2 sts, half-shell in last st - 5 (6) shells and 2 half shells in this row.
Row 3: Ch 1, turn, sc in first st, sk next 2 sts, shell in next st, *sk next 2 sts, sc in next st, sk next 2 sts, shell in next st; rep from * to last 3 sts, sk next 2 sts, sc in top of beg ch-3 - 6 (7) shells.
Rows 4-37 (41): Rep Rows 2 and 3 for 17 (19) more times.
Fasten off.

Shape Lower End of Cocoon:
Decrease Row: Turn, sl st in first 3 sts, (sl st, ch 1, sc) in next st, *sk next 2 sts, shell in next st, sk next 2 sts, sc in next st; rep from * to last 3 sts; leave last 3 sts unworked - 5 (6) shells.
Rep Decrease Row 3 more times - 2 (3) shells when all decreases have been completed.
Fasten off.

BACK:
Work same as Front.

Joining:
Hold Front and Back with RS together and matching the sts along each side.
From WS and working through both thicknesses, join yarn with sc at top corner. Work sc evenly spaced through both thicknesses along side edge to join.
Fasten off.

Repeat to join opposite side.
Fasten off.
Turn Cocoon to RS.

Top Edging:
From RS, join yarn with a sl st at either side joining along top edge of Cocoon.
Rnd 1: Ch 1, sc evenly spaced around top edge of Cocoon; join with sl st in first sc.
Rnds 2-4: Ch 1, turn, sc in each st around; join with sl st in first sc.
Fasten off.

Tail:
Row 1 (RS): From RS, and working across lower end of Cocoon through both thicknesses, join yarn with sc in first st, sc in each st across - 13 (19) sc.
Row 2: Ch 1, turn, sc in each st across.
Rows 3-9: Ch 1, turn, 2 sc in first st, sc in each st to last st, 2 sc in last st - 27 (33) sc at the end of Row 9.
Row 10: Ch 1, turn, sc in each st across.
Place marker in center st of Row 10.

First Tail Fin:
Row 1 (RS): Ch 1, turn, 2 sc in first st, sc in next 12 (15) sts; leave rem sts unworked - 14 (17) sc.
