  • 3 Packets of unfinished wood square boxes (sm, med, lg,)
  • 1 Unfinished wood mailbox
  • 1 Unfinished 12"x 10" wood crate
  • Acrylic paints: white, terra cotta, brown
  • 1 Small paintbrush
  • 1 Medium paintbrush
  • 1 Stencil paintbrush
  • Assorted felt: gray, taupe, yellow, neutral oatmeal
  • Home décor chalk paint: white, cream, gray, soft gray blue, light tan
  • 1 Bottle of wood fusion glue
  • Dark brown sharpie marker
  • Scissors
  • 1 Sheet of cardstock
  • X-ACTO® knife

If you decide to use the large crate, you will need: a circular saw or table saw, hammer, nails to make it shallower in depth.

DIRECTIONS:

  1. Decide your layout of boxes to create the shelving system. It will take several tries to figure out a pattern that has good balance and works with the dimensions.
  2. If you choose to use the large wood crate you will need to disassemble it, cut the sides of the crate to the same depth of the other boxes and then rebuild it to be the same depth as the other boxes.
  3. Paint the boxes different colors preferring not to have adjoining same colors (including the back inside of the boxes). Let dry.
  4. Select your felt to line the bottom of the containers and cut to fit boxes.
  5. Make a stencil using cardstock & X-ACTO knife. Cut three clouds out on the sheet that will fit inside the boxes.
  6. Stencil the white clouds on the back inside of each box. Let dry.
  7. Paint a cute animal, scene, or phrase inside the largest crate.
  8. Once all crates have been placed and painted, wood glue the boxes together. Let dry 24 hours before moving.

JOANN Hacks:

  • Make sure you decide where the boxes go in the layout BEFORE you paint them.
  • Try to arrange the boxes so that the sizes are balance in the overall design.
  • Design & color the tree with a sharpie, paint the fox or critter in scene before assembling boxes.
  • When gluing boxes together, clamp them in place with wood clamps.
