Sk2p = Slip 1, knit 2 together, pass slip stitch over the knit 2 together; 2 stitches have been decreased. M1 = Make 1 (Inc) – Lift strand between needles to left-hand needle and work strand through the back loop, twisting it to prevent a hole, [knit or purl as indicated by pattern st].

NOTE
This hat is worked in the round from the bottom up. Lace Pattern stitch count increases on Round 1 and returns to original count on Round 3.
BRIM
With smaller needle, cast on 68 (76) sts. Join, place marker at beginning of round, and begin to work circularly.
Round 1: *K2, p2; repeat from * around. Repeat Round 1, 7 (9) times.
HAT BODY
Change to larger circular needle.
Set-Up Round: K17 (19), M1; repeat from * around - 72 (80) sts.

Begin Lace Pattern
Round 1: *Yo, k3, yo, k1; repeat from * around – 108 (120) sts. Round 2: Knit around. Round 3: K1, sk2p, *k3, sk2p; repeat from * to last 2 sts, k2 – 72 (80) sts. Round 4: Knit around. Work Rounds 1-4 of Lace Pattern until piece measures 6½ (7)” [16.5 (18)cm] from cast on edge, ending after a Round 4.
CROWN
Note: Change to double pointed needles when work is too small for circular needle.
Size Medium Only
Set-Up Decrease Round: *K3, k2tog; repeat from * around - 64 sts. Work Rounds 1-3 of Lace Pattern.

Sizes Small (Medium)
Decrease Round 1: *K2, k2tog; repeat from * around - 54 (48) sts. Work Rounds 1-3 of Lace Pattern. Decrease Round 2: *K1, k2tog; repeat from * around - 36 (32) sts. Work Rounds 1-3 of Lace Pattern. Decrease Round 3: *K2tog; repeat from * around – 18 (16) sts.
Final Decrease Round: *K2tog; repeat from * around - 9 (8) sts. Cut yarn leaving a tail 12" [30.5 cm] long. Draw through remaining stitches twice, fasten securely.
Finishing
Weave in yarn ends. Steam block hat over a dinner plate to create thesignature beret shape. Use gentle steam to permanently set the synthetic yarn, but do not steam the ribbing.
