SUPPLIES & TOOLS:

  • 4 3/4" yds of fabric
  • Two pieces of 5" project foam (measures 24"x 36")
  • 2 bags of stuffing
  • 1 bag (roll) of batting
  • Hot glue gun/glue sticks
  • 8" or 9" long upholstery needle
  • 2 X-large plastic bag
  • Sewing notions

DIRECTIONS:

All seams are 1/2" unless stated.
  1. Cut two (for bottom and top) 77 1/2"x 24" rectangles.
  2. Cut two sections 77 1/2"x 7 1/2", cut two sections 49"x 7 1/2". Sew sections together to complete strip. Sew strips together then sew to top rectangle. Sew strip to bottom rectangle leaving 6" openings every 18" for later stuffing and leaving one end opening to insert pillow.
  3. Place two pieces of project foam together to make one, wrap batting around project foam, gluing the overlaps together. Wrap the pillow in the plastic bags (cutting plastic open to one sheet). The plastic bag will slide pillow into the fabric easily. Without the plastic it will be very hard to insert. Push wrapped foam into fabric rectangle. After insertion, pull the plastic wrap out.
  4. Push the stuffing into the pillow sides and on top, using the 6" openings to stuff. Pin seam allowances together. Add more stuffing if needed before closing. Hand stitch openings closed. To make tufting around edges: Measure 1" above seam line and 1" below seam line. Hand stitching in and out about spacing 2" apart until all edges are tufted. Turn pillow over and repeat.
  5. Find the middle of pillow, mark for tufts: Place two marks 8" from the edge. Mark the second set of tuffs: 13 1/2" up and below from the middle tuffs. Make markings on the top of the pillow and the base. Thread upholstery needle with four to six strands of thread, push needle to the base side marking, go over about 3/8", then come back up to the top of pillow. Push pillow with your thumb to indent, tie in a several knots to secure. Cut off excess thread leaving 1/2" to decorate.
