SUPPLIES & TOOLS:

  • 2 1/4yds 45" leopard fabric for outside & lining
  • 1/2yds of pink for bias trim 45" fabric
  • 2 3/4yds of heavy interfacing (22" wide)
  • 2 3/4yds of medium interfacing (22" wide)
  • 2 adjustable slide buckles
  • 1 pkg magnetic snaps
  • 2 gold 3/4" buttons
  • Fabric Tac
  • Kraft paper for pattern
  • Pencil
  • Thread
  • Sewing notions

DIRECTIONS:

  1. All seams are 1/2" unless stated.
  2. Cut four 14"x 12" fabric, interfacing (front, back and lining)
  3. Cut two 14"x 8" fabric, interfacing (top flap)
  4. Cut four 4 1/2"x 12" fabric, interfacing (sides)
  5. Cut two 4 1/2"x 14" fabric, interfacing (bottom)
  6. Cut two 10 1/2"x 5" fabric, interfacing (front pocket flap)
  7. Cut two 10 1/2"x 6 1/2" fabric, interfacing (front pocket)
  8. Cut two 2 1/2"x 12" fabric, interfacing (side of front pocket)
  9. Cut one 12"x 4" fabric, interfacing (top handle)
  10. Cut two 21"x 3" fabric, interfacing (back straps)
  11. Cut one 1 1/4"x 4" fabric (loops for back straps)
  12. Press heavy interfacing to leopard 1 each of front and back. Press medium interfacing to leopard front and back lining.
  13. Press heavy interfacing to the 2 top flaps. Sew pieces together, trim seam allowance, turn and press flat. Place male snap on the inside of top flap. Sew flap to back of the backpack top. Sew lining, through flap and back, turn, stay stitch down to secure.
  14. Front Pocket:
  15. Press heavy interfacing and medium interfacing to front flaps pieces, sew around flap, and trim seam allowance, turn and press. Place male snap to the center of flap down a 1 1/2".
  16. Sew the front pocket lining to fabric to the top seam, turn and top stitch 1/4".
  17. Sew both pieces of the 2 1/2"x 12" together with a 1/2" seam (this is the center bottom of pocket sides). Sew the top (fabric and lining) of the sides, turn then top stitch 1/4". Repeat the same on the other side of pocket.
  18. Place backpack's front and sides, wrong sides together, stitch a 1/4" to keep all layers together. Sew pink bias trim to the under outside, turn, fold under bias trim 1/4" and top stitch. Mark the middle of the front and the middle of the pocket. Mark from the bottom up 1 1/2". Pin pocket where the bottom of the pocket should be, continue to place and pin pocket into place. Turn under 1/2" of the side to the front piece of backpack. Stitch on to the edge. Sew pocket flap a 1 1/2" away from the top of pocket, trim seam then turn and top stitch 3/8" down to secure.
  19. Follow the same instructions in Step 4 in sewing the pink bias to backpack front and back but change to female snap and use the measurement to the front to match up with male snap.
  20. Sew heavy interfacing to handle and back straps, sew to finish 1". Attach handle to top turning under 1/2" to each side.
  21. Sew a loop, cut in half, decide placement, and sew to bottom of back. Top stitch straps to the top back, thread through bottom loops. Follow instructions on threading straps through slide buckles.
  22. If the gold button has a shank, cut off shank with a wire cutter then glue down with Fabric Tac.
