Lizard Appliqued Pillowcase

SUPPLIES & TOOLS:

  • 1 1/4 yd Flannel - Main Fabric, Lizard Print
  • 1/4 yd Coordinating Fabric for Cuff
  • 2" x WOF Coordinating Fabric for Accent
  • 14" x 16" Solid Flannel for Lizard Applique
  • 2 - 6" x 6" Remnants for Lizard Stripes
  • 1/2 yd Fusible Webbing for machine applique
  • Paper - optional for hand applique
  • Matching Thread
  • Basic Sewing Supplies

DIRECTIONS:

NOTE: Use preferred method of applique - machine or hand.
  • Cut 1: main fabric - 42" wide x 23"
  • Cuff - 42" wide x 9"
  • Accent - 42" wide x 2"
  • Pin or baste RS of cuff to WS of long edge of main fabric.
  • Press accent piece in half lengthwise.
  • Pin or baste accent piece to RS of main fabric.
  • Sew all layers together with a 1/2" seam; press.
  • Press under 1/2" on long edge of cuff, fold and press cuff over to cover seam on RS.
  • Edge stitch cuff in place.
  • Enlarge lizard pattern.
  • Cut random 1/2" strips from remnants for stripes.
  • Hint: do not make the stripes perfect; vary the sizes - see photo for reference.
  • Using preferred method, applique stripes to lizard.
  • Applique lizard to center front of pillowcase.
  • Sew pillowcase side and bottom together with a 1/2" seam allowance or a French seam.
  • To Create a French Seam:
  • With WS together, sew a 1/4" seam. Turn inside out and press along seam with RS together. Sew a 1/4" seam enclosing raw edge. Turn right side out and press.
