Item # 52916631P15
Intermediate Weekend Project

SUPPLIES & TOOLS:

  • 170 yds of medium weight yarn or 5/3" cotton cording
  • Masking tape
  • Scissors

DIRECTIONS:

  1. Cut cord into 5 yd pieces.
  2. Place one cord at the top of the work surface. Find the middle of this cord and begin attaching the other cords onto it but folding them in half and attaching them with a lark's head knot.
  3. Use the masking tape to secure the top cord to the work surface. Fold down the ends of the top cord on either side and include them in the working cords.
  4. Begin the cover-up with 3 rows of alternating square knots.
  5. Separate the first 12 stands and the last 12. Work only in the middle 44 cords for the next section.
  6. Right diagonal half hitch across the first 21 cords.
  7. Left diagonal half hitch across the last 21 cords, then continue along the rest of the row.
  8. Start at the middle of the last line made, and right half hitch across the last 21 cords. This will create an X pattern.
  9. Work 3 rows of alternating square knots.
  10. Move to the first section of 12 skipped cords. Work 4 rows of alternating square knots.
  11. Hold all the cords in this first section together. With the first 2 and last 2 cords of this section, work 2 square knots around all the other cords in this section.
  12. Continue back to working 4 rows of alternating square knots.
  13. Repeat steps 10-12 with the last skipped section of 12 cords.
  14. Begin to work rows of alternating square knots across the entire piece, attaching the two outer sections to the middle section.
  15. Continue making rows of alternating square knots until the piece reaches the desired length.
  16. Trim the fringe to the desired length.

JOANN Hacks:

  • Adding more cords across at the beginning of the piece will adjust the cover-up to a larger size.
