SUPPLIES & TOOLS:
  • 1/4 yd. ea. - 2 patriotic novelty fabrics
  • ½ yd. - 1 coordinating patriotic fabric for last strip
  • 1/4 yd. -Novelty fabric for top casing pocket
  • 1–dowel rod
  • Paint for dowel rod
  • Basic Sewing Supplies
  • Matching thread

DIRECTIONS:
Needs finished size 30” x 15”
  1. (1/2” seam allowance)

  2. Cut 1 – 5 1/2” x 18” from top fabric
  3. Cut 1 – 5 1/2” x 30” from middle fabric
  4. Cut 2 – 5 1/2” x 25” of fabric for bottom fabric.
  5. Cut 1 – 4” x Width from casing fabric
  6. Gather top of first fabric 1/4” from cut edge and again 1/2” from edge.
  7. Pull the threads and gather as tight as possible. Tie ends.
  8. Gather top of middle fabric and evenly pin and stitch to bottom of 1st fabric .
  9. Sew the two pieces of last fabric together at short ends
  10. Gather top of last fabric and stitch to bottom of 2nd fabric.
  11. Trim seams and press all towards top.
  12. Narrow the hem on the last strip.
  13. Narrow the hem of both sides of banner.
  14. Cut casing 4 1/2” x width of fabric.
  15. Press under 1/4” on one long side of casing.
  16. With RST stitch casing to top of bunting leaving excess of fabric on both sides.
  17. Fold sides in and stitch 1/2” in from sides. Trim excess
  18. Fold fabric to back with folded edge over seam. Sew along edge to form casing.
  19. Insert dowel rod.

JOANN Hacks:
  • Mark each strip edge into 3rds before gathering. This will help in spreading out the gathers evenly.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Answering question for Cindy… Cindy, I can’t reply to your review but I looked at the instructions. You are cutting two pieces for the third/bottom tier and then sew them together, making that bottom one longer than the others.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from How can the 3rd layer be shorter than the second? Please check the measurements - how can second layer be 30" long and the third layer be only 25" long? Is the second layer super gathered and 3rd layer not?
