DESCRIPTION +

SUPPLIES & TOOLS:
  • (Yardage will depend on size of lining. The listed amounts are for small.)
  • 2 yds polka dot calico fabric
  • 2-3 yds gray background fabric
  • 1 yd of striped fabric for block center
  • Medium loft batting
  • 1/4 to 1/2 yds binding
  • 2-3 yd backing
  • 4-6 buttons for holding sides of lining to coat
  • Basic sewing supplies
  • Rotary cutter & board (optional)
  • Matching thread
  • Sewing machine

DIRECTIONS:
  1. Use 1/4" seam for one 16" square.
  2. From gray fabric, cut four 4 1/2" squares, four 2 1/2" squares, four 4 7/8" squares (cut in half diagonally) & four 2 7/8" squares (cut in half diagonally).
  3. From polka dot cut four 4 7/8" squares (cut in half diagonally), four 2 7/8" squares (cut in half diagonally).
  4. From stripe fabric cut four 2 1/2" squares.
  5. Stitch the dark triangles together with the light triangles.
  6. To print the diagram, click on the "Download Project PDF" button (above). Following diagram stitch row 1 and 3 using large squares and large triangle squares. Set aside.
  7. For row 2, start with center squares and build out with small triangles and squares.
  8. Finish block by adding row 1 and 3 to sides of finished row 2.
  9. You will need to decide how you want to lay out the design for your lining.
  10. The lining is made by alternating the completed large block with the center small block.
  11. Stitch the blocks together into one large quilt, or by stitching blocks to fit the back of your coat, and a separate piece for the sides.
  12. Layer the blocks with the backing, batting and top. Quilt as desired.
  13. Place quilt over inside of coat and trim around armhole.
  14. Stitch shoulder seam, and side seam if separate pieces were used.
  15. Make binding and stitch around outside of lining and armhole.
  16. Place lining inside of coat and mark sides for buttonholes.
  17. Stitch buttonholes and buttons to lining.
  18. A button can be used at collar or just tack lining to coat.
