Susan Bates® Knitting Needles: 5.5mm [US 9]

Cable Needle, Yarn Needle, pompom maker

GAUGE: 17 sts = 4” (10 cm) in Cable Ridge pattern. CHECK YOUR GAUGE. Use any size needle to obtain the gauge.

Finished measurement:

Head circumference: 18½” (47 cm), stretching to fit up to 22” (56 cm).

Beanies fit most men and women.

Special Stitches

CF4 = Cable 4 Front – Slip next 2 stitches onto cable needle and hold at front of work, K2 from the left needle, K2 from the cable needle.
CB4 = Cable 4 Back – Slip next 2 stitches onto cable needle and hold at back of work, K2 from the left needle, K2 from the cable needle.
K2tog/K3tog = Knit 2/3 sts together (decrease).
SSK = Slip, Slip, Knit – Slip next 2 stitches, knitwise, to right needle, insert point of left needle through the front of stitches, knit these stitches together through the back loop (1 stitch decrease).

Row 1 (Right Side): With B, purl across.

Row 2: K2, (P2, K2) across.

Row 3: P2, (K2, P2) across.

Repeat Rows 2 and 3 for Ribbing until piece measures approximately 2½” (6 cm) from cast on edge, ending by working a right side row.

Row 1 and ALL WRONG SIDE ROWS: P1, *P4, K2, P5, K2, P4, K2; repeat from * across to last st, P1.

Row 2 (Right Side): P1, *P2, CF4, P2, K5, P2, CB4; repeat from * across to last st, P1.

Row 4: P1, *P2, K4, P2, K5, P2, K4; repeat from * across to last st, P1.

Row 6: P1, *P2, K4, P9, K4; repeat from * across to last st, P1. Repeat Rows 1-6 until Beanie measures approximately 7” (18 cm) from cast on edge, ending by working Row 6.

CROWN SHAPING

Row 1: P1, *P4, K2tog, P5, K2tog, P4, K2tog; repeat from * across to last st, P1—66 sts.

Row 2 (Right Side): P1, *P1, CF4, P1, K5, P1, CB4; repeat from * across to last st, P1.
Row 3: P1, *P4, K1, P5, K1, P4, K1; repeat from * across to last st, P1.

Row 4: P1, *P1, K4, P1, SSK, K1, K2tog, P1, K4; repeat from * across to last st, P1—58 sts.

Row 5: P1, *P4, K1, P3, K1, P4, K1; repeat from * across to last st, P1.

Row 6: P1, *P1, K4, P1, K3tog, P1, K4; repeat from * across to last st, P1—50 sts.

FINISHING

Cut yarn, leaving a 15” (38 cm) tail. Thread yarn needle with tail and weave through remaining stitches. Draw up firm; fasten securely. With right sides together and matching stitches, sew seam. With A, make one medium size pompom and attach securely to crown of Beanie.

With B, cast on 78 sts.

Row 1 (Right Side): With A, purl across.

Work as for Green Beanie through Finishing.

FINISHING

Cut yarn, leaving a 15” (38 cm) tail. Thread yarn needle with tail and weave through remaining stitches. Draw up firm; fasten securely. With right sides together and matching stitches, sew seam. With B, make one medium size pompom and attach securely to crown of Beanie.
