GAUGE: Rounds 1 and 2 measure 3” (7.5 cm) wide; One square measures 8½ x 8½” (20.5 x 20.5 cm). CHECK YOUR GAUGE. Use any size hook to obtain the gauge.
Throw measures 44” (112 cm) wide and 61” (155 cm) long, including border.
Special Stitches
ch-2 join = Ch 1, drop loop from hook, insert hook from front to back through corresponding ch-2 space of neighboring
square, place dropped loop back on hook and draw through, ch 1.
corner-join = There are two different types of corner join. One is used when joining at a corner where only 2 squares meet (2 corner join). The other is used when joining at a corner where 4 squares meet (4 corner join). Work the appropriate join for the situation.
2 corner join = Ch 2, drop loop from hook, insert hook from front to back through corresponding corner ch-4 space of neighboring square, place dropped loop back on hook and draw through, ch 2.
4 corner join = Ch 2, drop loop from hook, insert hook from front to back through corresponding corner ch-4 space of first neighboring square, place dropped loop back on hook and draw through, ch 1, drop loop from hook, skip ch-4 space of next neighboring square (square diagonally across from current square), insert hook from front to back through corner ch-4 space of next neighboring square, place dropped loop back on hook and draw through, ch 2. Note: If you are right-handed, the first neighboring square is the first square counter-clockwise from current square. If you are left-handed, the first neighboring square is the first square clockwise from current square.shell = (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in indicated space. V-st (V-stitch) = (Dc, ch 1, dc) in indicated stitch.
Notes
1. Throw is made from 35 squares; 18 worked with an A-colored center, and 17 worked with a B-colored center.
2. The squares are arranged in 5 rows of 7 squares each, alternating center colors, and joined using a “join-as-you- go” technique while working the last round.
3. Each square is worked in joined rounds with right side facing at all times.
SQUARE 1
With A, ch 4; join with slip st in first ch to form a ring.
Round 1 (right side): Ch 1, [sc in ring, ch 3] 8 times; join with slip st in first sc—8 sc and 8 ch-3 spaces.
Round 2: (Slip st, ch 1, sc, ch 3, sc) in first ch-3 space, (sc, ch 3, sc) in each remaining ch-3 space around; join with slip st in first sc—16 sc and 8 ch-3 spaces.
Round 3: (Slip st, ch 1, sc) in first ch-3 space, [ch 4, sc in next ch-3 space] 7 times, ch 4; join with slip st in first sc—8 sc and 8 ch-4 spaces. Round 4: Ch 1, sc in same sc as joining, shell in next ch-4 space, *sc in next sc, shell in next ch-4 space; repeat from * around; join with slip st in first sc—8 sc and 8 shells.
Round 5: Ch 4 (counts as dc, ch 1, dc in same sc as joining (first V-st made), ch 2, sc in ch-2 space of next shell, *ch 2, V-st in next sc, ch 2, sc in ch-2 space of next shell; repeat from * around, ch 2; join with slip st in 3rd ch of beginning ch—8 sc and 8 V-sts.
Round 6: Ch 1, sc in same ch as joining, sc in next ch-1 space, sc in next dc, 2 sc in next ch-2 space, sc in next sc, 2 sc in next ch-2 space, *sc in next dc, sc in next ch-1 space, sc in next dc, 2 sc in next ch-2 space, sc in next sc, 2 sc in next ch-2 space; repeat from * around; join with slip st in first sc—64 sc. Fasten off A.
Round 7 (right side): With right side facing, join C with sc in any sc worked into the ch-1 space of a V-st, *ch 2, skip next 2 sc, hdc in next sc, ch 2, skip next 2 sc, dc in next sc, ch 1, skip next sc, (2 tr, ch 2, 2 tr) in next sc (corner made), ch 1, skip next sc, dc in next sc, ch 2, skip next 2 sc, hdc in next sc, ch 2, skip next 2 sc**, sc in next sc; repeat from * around ending last repeat at ** ; join with slip st in first sc.
Round 8: Ch 1, sc in same sc as joining, *2 sc in next ch-2 space, sc in next hdc, 2 sc in next ch-2 space, sc in next dc, sc in next ch-1 space, sc in next 2 tr, (sc, ch 3, sc) in corner ch-2 space, sc in next 2 tr, sc in next ch-1 space, sc in next dc, 2 sc in next ch-2 space, sc in next hdc, 2 sc in next ch-2 space**, sc in next sc; repeat from * around ending last repeat at **; join with slip st in first sc—84 sc (21 across each side of square) and 4 corner ch-3 spaces. Round 9 (right side): With right side facing, draw up a loop D in 2nd sc immediately following any ch-3 corner space, ch 1, (sc, ch 2, sc) in same sc as joining, [*skip next sc, (sc, ch 2, sc) in next sc; repeat from * to 1 sc before next corner ch-3 space, skip next sc, (sc, ch 2, sc, ch 4, sc, ch 2, sc) in corner ch-3 space] 4 times; join with slip st in first sc.
Fasten off D.
SQUARES 2–35
Work same as Rounds 1–8 of Square 1, using B for Rounds 1–6 (center) of each even- numbered square and A for Rounds 1-6 of each odd-numbered square.
Notes
1. The next round joins the current square to neighboring squares.
2. Refer to Assembly Diagram to determine how many neighboring squares to which the current square needs to be joined. Work “One-Side Joining Round” or “Two-Side Joining Round” as needed.
3. Join squares in order indicated in Assembly Diagram, joining squares into 5 rows of 7 squares each, alternating the center color.
4. Refer to “Special Stitches” for instructions for working ch-2 join and corner joins.

With right side facing, draw up a loop of D in any ch-2 space following a corner ch-4 space. Round 1 (right side): Ch 1, (sc, ch 2, sc) in same ch-2 space as joining, [*(sc, ch 2, sc) in each ch-2 space to next seam between squares, sc in corner ch-4 space before seam, ch 3, sc in corner ch-4 space following seam; repeat from * to last square of edge, (sc, ch 2, sc) in each ch-2 space of last square of edge, (sc, ch 4, sc) in corner ch-4 space] 4 times, (sc, ch 2, sc) in last ch-2 space; join with slip st in first sc.
