  • Yarn needle, stitch markers, 6-strand embroidery floss in blue, red, yellow, and black, polyester fiberfill, red crayon (to shade cheeks)

Special Stitches

loop st = Wrap yarn from front to back over the index finger of your yarn hand to a height of about 1½" (4 cm), insert hook in indicated stitch, hook the strand of yarn from behind your index finger and draw through the stitch; with the yarn loop still on your index finger, yarn over and draw through 2 loops on your hook.

sc2tog = [Insert hook in next stitch, yarn over and pull up a loop] twice, yarn over and draw through all 3 loops on hook.

 

Notes

  1. Head, body, and arms of dolls are worked in unjoined rounds with right side facing at all times. Place marker for beginning of round and move marker up as each round_x000B_is completed. Do not join until instructed._x000B_
  2. To change color, work last stitch of old color to last yarn over. Yarn over with new color and draw through all loops on hook to complete stitch. Proceed with new color. Cut old color._x000B_
  3. Hold 6 strands of embroidery floss together when making facial features._x000B_
  4. Draw all ends into head, body, and arms before finishing each doll to minimize weaving in._x000B_

LITTLE RED RIDING HOOD

Head

Beginning at center of face, with A, ch 2. Round 1: Work 6 sc in 2nd ch from hook—6 sc. Place marker for beginning of round and move up as each round is completed. Round 2: Work 2 sc in each sc around—12 sc. Round 3: *Sc in next sc, 2 sc in next sc; repeat from * around—18 sc. Round 4: *Sc in next 2 sc, 2 sc in next sc; repeat from * around; changing to B—24 sc. Round 5: Working in back loops only, sc in each sc around. _x000B_  _x000B_ Round 6: Sc in each sc around. Round 7: *Sc in next 6 sc, sc2tog; repeat from * around—21 sc. Round 8: Sc in each sc around. Round 9: *Sc in next 5 sc, sc2tog; repeat from * around—18 sc. Hair

  Row 1: Working in back loops, join with slip st in 3rd sc at right of marked st on Round 4, leave marker in place, *ch 2, slip st in next sc; repeat from * around; leave last 3 sc before marked st unworked. Fasten off.

 

Body

Beginning at bottom of feet, with D, ch 6. Round 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in next 3 ch, 3 sc in last ch; working in opposite side of foundation ch, skip first ch, sc in next 3 ch, 2 sc in last ch—12 sc. Place marker for beginning of round and move up as each round is completed. Round 2: Work 2 sc in next sc, sc in next 3 sc, 2 sc in next 3 sc, sc in next 3 sc, 2 sc in last 2 sc—18 sc. Arm (make 2)

With A, ch 2. Round 1: Work 6 sc in 2nd ch from hook—6 sc. Place marker for beginning of round and move up as each round is completed. Round 2: Sc in each sc around; change to D. Rounds 3–7: Sc in each sc around. Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing.

Skirt With E, ch 19. Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across, turn—18 sc. Row 2: Ch 3 (counts as first dc here and throughout), dc in first sc, 2 dc in each remaining sc across, turn—36 dc. Row 3: Ch 3, dc in each dc across. Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing.

FINISHING

LITTLE RED RIDING HOOD

Head

With blue embroidery floss, embroider French knot eyes; embroider smile with red embroidery floss and couched stitching. Color cheeks with red crayon.

Flatten body slightly. With strand of D, back stitch through center sts of Rounds 1–5.

Body

With end tail of body, sew head in place on Round 14. Sew arms in place.

Clothing

Place skirt around waist of doll and, working in ends of rows, sew back seam. With yellow embroidery floss, embroider 5 French knots evenly spaced between Rows 3 and 4 of apron. Sew apron over skirt.

Sew cape around neck. Weave in ends.

GRANDMOTHER

Head

Work same as Little Red Riding Hood head, changing to at end of Round 4.

 

Hat Ruffle Row 1: Working in back loops, join with slip st in 3rd sc at right of marked st on Round 4, leave marker in place, *3 sc in next sc, slip st in next sc; repeat from * around; leave last 3 sc before marked st unworked. Fasten off.

Body

With G, work same as Little Red Riding Hood body.

 

Arm (make 2)

Work same as Little Red Riding Hood arm, changing to at end of Round 2.

 

Nightgown

With H, work Rows 1 and 2 same as Little Red Riding Hood skirt. Rows 3–5: Ch 3, dc in each dc across, turn.

Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing.

FINISHING GRANDMOTHER

Head

Embroider facial features and color cheeks same as Little Red Riding Hood. With black embroidery floss, back stitch around eyes to make eyeglasses. Join with slip st in any sc at top of head, 3 loop sts in same sc. Fasten off.

 

Braid

Cut 7 strands of each measuring 14" (35.5 cm). Tie 1 strand tightly around center of remaining 6 strands. Tie center strand to side of head under ruffle. Fold over gathered strands and braid 12 strands of yarn to desired length. Secure with another short strand of and trim all strands.

Legs

With G, shape same as Little Red Riding Hood.

 

Body

Sew head and arms to body. Sew nightgown around body in same manner as Little Red Riding Hood skirt. Weave in ends.
