SUPPLIES & TOOLS:

  • Wedding Veil
  • Silk Flowers with Stems Removed
  • Needle and Thread
  • Rit All-Purpose Liquid Dye: Petal Pink, Violet, Pearl Grey, Emerald Green, Neon Yellow and Purple
  • Large Plastic Container
  • Measuring Cup
  • Plastic Gloves
  • Plastic Table Cover
  • Paper Towels

DIRECTIONS:

  1. Cover table with plastic. Gather supplies.
  2. Determine the material you are working with. If the veil is store-bought and the material is not listed, use a dye color from our DyeMore line of products. If the veil is a natural fiber like silk, rayon or nylon you can use our All-Purpose dyes.
  3. For the veils featured in this project, we used our All-Purpose dye line.
  4. To prepare dyebath: Fill large plastic tub or bucket with 1 1/2 gallons of very hot tap water (140° F). If water is not hot enough, heat water in a cook pot or teapot. Shake dye bottle before pouring. Here are the color formulas used for the featured wedding veils.
  5. Pink Lavender: Add 1 tablespoons Violet and 1/2 teaspoons Petal Pink to 1.5 gallons of water; stir well. The veil sat in the dyebath for 1 minute and 30 seconds.
  6. Dusty Blue Color: Add 1/2 tablespoon of Pearl Grey and 1 1/2 teaspoons Emerald Green to 1.5 gallons of water; stir well. The veil sat in the dyebath for 1 minute and 30 seconds.
  7. Gold: Add 1/4 cup Neon Yellow and 1/4 cup Golden Yellow to 1.5 gallons of water; stir well. The veil sat in the dyebath for 1 minute and 30 seconds. The veil was very yellow once removed so we gave the veil a one second dip in a dyebath of water and Violet to tone it down. The gold appliques on this veil were purchased in gold and added to the dyed veil once dry.
  8. Note: we also dyed synthetic veils and the synthetic veils sat in their dyebaths for 30 minutes.
  9. We recommend buying a second veil for testing the color. Cut the veil into swatches that can be used for testing the color. Once the dyebath is created, test the color by dipping a piece of the veil into the dyebath. If color is too light, add more dye. If color is too dark, add more water.
  10. Wearing gloves, submerge veil and stir. Each veil sat in the dye baths for 1 minute and 30 seconds.
  11. Remove from dyebath and rinse veil under cold running water until water begins to run clear. Set aside to dry.
  12. Floral Embellishments: We created several dyebaths to dye the silk flowers. Once dyed and dry, the flowers were stitched on to the veils with thread and needle.
  13. Optional: Use Rit ColorStay Dye Fixative to preserve color, follow package instructions.
