Beginner Weekend Project
SUPPLIES & TOOLS:
  • Road panel
  • 2 yds fabric for backing and binding
  • Batting
  • Thread
  • Cutting mat and rotary cutter
  • Assorted buttons for embellishment (optional)
  • Sewing needles

DIRECTIONS:
  1. Lay out panel and cut pieces of batting and backing a couple of inches larger than the panel.
  2. Make quilt sandwich with panel, batting and backing. Pin the sandwich together pulling tight and pinning every 4 to 6 inches.
  3. Machine quilt the center line and the sides of the road over the entire panel. Add a row of stitching around the blue border of the panel. Cut out the panel along the row of stitching.
  4. Sew on assorted buttons to make hub caps, wheels, door knobs, flower centers and lights.
  5. Cut 4 strips of binding 2 1/2 inches wide. Sew together and fold in half lengthwise and press.
  6. Pin and sew binding to front of quilt. Fold over to the back and pin. Sew in the ditch on the front along the binding to attach the binding to the back.

JOANN Hacks:
  • We used a spray adhesive to hold the pieces when making the quilt sandwich before pinning. This kept the pieces from moving.
  • The buttons really add dimension to the quilt. Have fun choosing and matching buttons that work with the colors on the quilt.
