SUPPLIES & TOOLS:

  • Square By Design® Vintage Toys Square
  • 2yds 54" width fabric for front and backing
  • 1/2yd accent fabric
  • 5yds medium weight fusible interfacing
  • 18" wooden dowel or cafe curtain rod
  • Knitting yarn in 2-3 colors to match motifs
  • Sewing machine
  • Basic sewing supplies
  • Iron and pressing surface
  • Optional: Rotary cutter, mat & transparent ruler
  • Optional: Heat transfer vinyl or paint pen

DIRECTIONS:

  1. Note: Seam allowances are 1/2" unless otherwise noted. If ironing is needed, use dry iron.
  2. Fuse interfacing to Square By Design® Square. Carefully cut apart the motifs between the rectangles to create 4 individual rectangles that measure approximately 6 3/8" tall x 6 5/8" wide, with the individual motif centered.
  3. Fuse interfacing to back of accent fabric. Cut 8 strips 6 3/8" tall x 2 1/2" wide. Pin and stitch with a 1/4" seam to the left and right sides of each toy rectangle. Press strips outward.
  4. Cut 8 accent fabric strips 12" wide x 2 1/2" tall. Pin and stitch with a 1/4" seam to the top and bottom sides of each toy rectangle. Press strips outward.
  5. Measure rectangles and trim to 10 5/8" wide x 10 3/8" tall if necessary.
  6. Cut a strip of primary fabric 3" wide by 33" long. Fuse interfacing to back of fabric and cut into (3) 3"x 10 5/8" strips. Beginning and ending with a toy rectangle, sew a primary fabric strip between toy rectangles, forming one long rectangle that begins and ends with a toy rectangle.
  7. Cut and fuse two strips of primary fabric, 10 5/8" wide x 4" tall. Pin and sew one strip to the top of the long rectangle. Pin and sew the remaining strip to the bottom edge of the long rectangle. Fold strips outward. Press.
  8. Cut two strips 60" tall x 2 1/2" wide. Fuse interfacing to back of each strip. Pin and stitch one strip to the left side of the long rectangle. Repeat on the right side with the remaining strip. Trim excess at top and bottom if necessary. Fold strips outward. Press.
  9. Measure final size of assembled large rectangle. Cut a piece of primary fabric the same size and fuse interfacing to back side.
  10. Placing right sides together, pin and stitch backing to large rectangle, leaving an opening for turning along the bottom edge and a 1 1/2" opening at the top of each long side seam.
  11. Trim seams, press and turn right side out. Press. Turn raw edges of opening fabric in, press and slip stitch closed. Stitch horizontally 1 1/2" from the top edge through all layers to form a rod pocket. Press.
  12. Optional: To make a growth chart, mark long right edge in method of choice. The growth chart in photograph was marked using heat transfer vinyl. A paint pen could also be used to mark measurement lines. Test methods on scrap fabric first.
  13. The chart may be hung with the rod or with a 24" length of coordinating ribbon tied to each end of the rod to form a loop. Use knitting yarn to make tassels in method of choice to attach to the left and right sides of the rod. Hang completed chart so that the 1' mark is 12" above the floor.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Unique, creative options I made two versions of this growth chart incorporating personal pictures printed on fabric along with the vintage toys. They are beautiful pieces to be enjoyed for years to come—looking forward to the reactions of family members when they receive them for Christmas.
