SUPPLIES & TOOLS:

  • 1/2 yd each of five cotton print fabrics
  • 2 yd white cotton fabric
  • 3 yd backing fabric
  • 1/2 yd fabric for binding
  • 54"x 54" piece of batting
  • Template plastic
  • Rotary cutter, ruler, and mat
  • Basic sewing supplies
  • Iron and pressing surface
  • Sewing machine

DIRECTIONS:

  1. 50"x 50" Quilt
  2. Read all instructions before cutting and sewing. Use accurate 1/4" seams.
  3. Using Diagram 1, trace and cut a template of the triangle and diamond shape from the template plastic.
  4. From white fabric, cut 3 strips 4"x WOF. Using the templates, trace and cut 15 triangles and 9 diamonds.
  5. Cut a 4"x WOF strip from each of the 5 prints. Trace and cut 3 triangles and 2 diamonds from each print strip.
  6. On the straight grain of white fabric, cut 15 each of the following size strips: 2"x 6", 2"x 8", 2"x 10", 2"x 12". Cut 3 each of the same sizes from the prints.
  7. Using triangles and 2" strips, follow Diagram 2. Mix fabrics to your liking. Sew each strip to the triangle per the diagram. Press and trim as each strip is added. You will have 30 triangle blocks when finished.
  8. On the straight grain of white fabric cut the following: 9 strips at 1 1/2"x 4 1/2", 18 strips at 1 1/2"x 5 1/2", 18 strips at 1 1/2"x 6 1/2", 18 strips at 1 1/2"x 9", 18 strips at 1 1/2"x 9 1/2", 9 strips at 1 1/2"x 10 1/2", 9 strips at 1 1/2"x 11", 9 strips at 1 1/2"x 12". From each print, cut 2 strips at 1 1/2"x 4 1/2", 1 1/2"x 10 1/2", 1 1/2"x 11" and 1 1/2"x 12". From each print, cut 4 strips at 1 1/2"x 5 1/2", 1 1/2"x 6 1/2", 1 1/2"x 9", and 1 1/2"x 9 1/2".
  9. Using diamond shapes and 1 1/2" strips, follow Diagram 3. Mix fabrics to your liking.
  10. Sew each strip to the diamond per diagram. Press and trim as each strip is added. You will have 18 diamond blocks when finished.
  11. Pick 6 of the diamond blocks and trim 3 on the right side and 3 on the left side as shown in Diagram 4 at 1/4" from center. These will be your side diamond blocks.
  12. Sew blocks together into 8 rows as shown in Diagram 5. Sew rows together to form quilt. Press well.
  13. Sandwich backing, batting and quilt top. Quilt by stitching in the ditch or as desired.
  14. Trim and bind quilt.
