SUPPLIES & TOOLS:

  • 1 yd Cotton fabric
  • 1 yd Contrasting cotton fabric
  • 4 yds Fusible mid-weight interfacing
  • Sewing machine
  • Thread
  • Rotary cutter, cutting mat & straightedge (or scissors)
  • Iron
  • Pencil
  • Straight pins

DIRECTIONS:

  1. To print the patterns, click on the "Download Project PDF" button (above).
  2. Cut out pattern pieces from cotton fabric and contrasting cotton fabric - one top, three crown pieces, and one brim from both fabrics.
  3. Place fusible interfacing on top of each pattern piece (fusible side down), trim and press with iron.
  4. On brim pieces, add an additional layer of interfacing to each piece, resulting in four layers of interfacing when the brim pieces are sewn together.
  5. Make the three marks as indicated on both top pieces.
  6. Sew together crown pieces, end-to-end, right sides together. Press open seams. Repeat for contrasting cotton pieces.
  7. Match crown seams up with top piece markings. Pin right sides together, and sew. Repeat for contrasting cotton pieces.
  8. Match crown bottom with inner edge of brim, pin, and sew together. Repeat for contrasting cotton pieces.
  9. Turn cotton fabric piece wrong side out and contrasting cotton fabric piece right side out. Place cotton fabric piece (wrong side out) on top of contrasting cotton fabric piece (right side out) and pin along the edge of the brim. Sew, leaving a 5" opening.
  10. Pull hat right side out through the opening, fold in and press the opening, then sew the opening closed.
  11. Topstitch the brim - Insert straight pins all around the brim edge once again. This time, use the pin ends to mark 1" inside the brim. Follow with your sewing machine as you topstitch all the way around. Remove the pins and insert them around the first line of topstitching to mark another line of topstitching, 1" in. Topstitch all the way around, using the pin ends as a guide.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Pattern is t correct I should of read the reviews first and I then would not have printed the pattern. The two first pieces were okay but the brim was way off!!!!

Rated 3 out of 5 by from need to fix pattern for sizing This was an easy project, but I knocked 2 stars off because of the sizing! I made the hat and it was too small for my head! The pattern either needs to be corrected (titled Child's Sun Hat) or notes need to be made to say increase by X to fit an adult sized head. If I had read the reviews ahead of time, I would have made the corrections on the first go round. Otherwise, it was a quick and easy project. I have since corrected the size to fit my head and remade it.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Total Bummer! This pattern is wrong and not made for an adult. Crown size is WAY too small. Fairly easy to make, but a waste of fabric & interfacing...and my time.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Way to small Not recommend for adults I guess as it doesn’t fit my average sized head. I wish I’d read the reviews before wasting supplies.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Sun hat Very disappointed. No idea if this is for child or adult. No mention of seam allowance. Started hat and Crown was very small. Who does this fit!

Rated 3 out of 5 by from need a tiny head This sun hat pattern is for a very small child. The opening for the head (6") will never fit an adult woman's head. The pattern was very easy to follow and fit together perfectly. However, do not be misled thinking this hat will fit an adult.
