Intermediate Weekend Project

SUPPLIES & TOOLS:

  • 3 sheets 36"x 40" foam core, white or black
  • Neutral gray fabric to cover the base of each board, 40"x 44"
  • Accent fabric in strips 4"-6"x 44" long for the stripes (you will need as least two for each board)
  • Package of Steam-A-Seam 2, double stick fusible tape
  • 3 rolls of quilting batting, Mountain Mist Medium loft 90"x 108" 1 per board
  • Hot glue gun/glue gun sticks
  • Iron and ironing board
  • X-acto® knife
  • Adhesive Velcro®
  • Cutting surface
  • Pencil

DIRECTIONS:

  1. Using a pencil draw out the shape of each surf board.
  2. With the X-acto knife, cut out the shape of the surfboard.
  3. In the middle of the surfboard, double layer the batting and hot glue to the board, staying away from the edges about 1".
  4. Double layer the bigger piece of batting onto the front of the surf board and make sure you have about 2" wrapping around to the backside.
  5. Lay the batting-covered board onto the fabric, with fabric face down.
  6. Cut out the fabric to be about 3" bigger than the board all the way around.
  7. Cut out your accent stripes for the front of the board allowing allowance at the top and bottom to be able to wrap around the board. Also make sure the stripes are 1/2" bigger than you want them to be.
  8. Using the iron and ironing board, press a 1/4" edge on each side of the strip.
  9. Use the Steam-A-Seam 2 and press it onto the folded pressed seam.
  10. Peel paper backing off and press with your iron onto the base fabric in the center from top to bottom.
  11. Make as many stripes as you desire, ironing them onto the base fabric.
  12. Place the base fabric with the stripes ironed on onto the front of the surfboard form.
  13. Hot glue the top and bottom of the fabric to the surfboard while slightly pulling it taunt.
  14. Flip the board over and glue the bottom edges across the board. Then flip the board over to check that your fabric looks straight.
  15. Flip the board over again to continue hot gluing around the board. Check every so often to make sure that you are pulling it taut evenly around the board as you glue it in place.
  16. Shark bite board: Use your X-acto knife and cut out the teeth bite. As you wrap that edge with the batting, use less batting so that the teeth are still defined. Hot glue the batting in place.
  17. To cover the teeth area, you will need to make separate pieces of fabric to wrap each tooth on the side view. Make sure to have a 1/4" pressed edge on the top and bottom of those pieces. You will hot glue each piece in place at the top and bottom of each tooth and then go into the inside corner. Overlap the fabric a bit in the corners so that the batting is not showing. Make sure you start at one side and work your way across the teeth as you are covering them.

JOANN Hacks:

  • Make sure you line up the fabric at the top and bottom before you start to completely glue around the edges.
  • When making the stripes, glue the smaller center stripe on top of a bigger stripe centered so that you are only making two stripes, but it looks like three. This makes less work.
  • Once the boards are completed, use hot glue or add adhesive Velcro on the backside of them to attach them together as a group so they don't move or you can hot glue them together as well.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from wanted to make the quilt! I was so excited to see this project picture in my joann's flyer, my son loves sharks and the quilt would be so great on his bunk bed (the surf boards are cute but wouldn't work) and the project is ONLY for the headboard. Grrrr, so disappointed and mad about that
