Watercolor Shibori Wall Hanging

SUPPLIES & TOOLS:

  • White cotton broadcloth
  • Fabric scissors
  • Watercolor set
  • Flat paintbrushes
  • Clothespins
  • Jumbo popsicle sticks
  • Craft glue
  • Iron & ironing board
  • Yarn
  • Pony beads

DIRECTIONS:

  1. Cut white cotton broadcloth into 5"x 7" rectangles.
  2. For blue wall hanging:
  3. Accordion-fold fabric rectangle long ways to forma a strip about 1 1/4"x 7".
  4. Accordion-fold the folded stripe into a triangle like you a making a paper football.
  5. Use a clothespin to hold the folds together.
  6. Dip folded fabric into a bowl of clean water until wet through. Use fingers to pinch out excess water, maintaining the folded pattern.
  7. Wet a paintbrush and load with dark blue watercolor paint. Brush paint onto the folded edges of the fabric. You may need to move the clothespin to reach all sides.
  8. Once sides are painted, carefully unfold fabric and lay flat to dry
  9. For teal wall hanging:
  10. Accordion-fold fabric rectangle long ways to forma a strip about 1 1/4"x 7".
  11. Accordion-fold the folded stripe into a square.
  12. Use a clothespin to hold the folds together.
  13. Dip folded fabric into a bowl of clean water until wet through. Use fingers to pinch out excess water, maintaining the folded pattern.
  14. Wet a paintbrush and load with teal watercolor paint. Brush paint onto the folded edges of the fabric. You may need to move the clothespin to reach all sides.
  15. Once sides are painted, carefully unfold fabric and lay flat to dry
  16. For rainbow wall hanging:
  17. Accordion-fold fabric rectangle long ways to forma a strip about 1"x 7".
  18. Clip clothespins to both sides of the strip.
  19. Dip folded fabric into a bowl of clean water until wet through. Use fingers to pinch out excess water, maintaining the folded pattern.
  20. Wet a paintbrush and load with watercolor paint. Brush paint onto any exposed area of the fabric changing colors as you move down the strip. Paint both sides of strip and use more paint to saturate the middle of the fabric. Do not move the clothespins.
  21. Once fabric is painted, carefully unfold fabric and lay flat to dry.

  22. Once fabric has dried, iron flat. Apply a thin layer of craft glue to edges of fabric to prevent fraying. Set aside for glue to dry.
  23. Use yarn and beads to embellish popsicle sticks.
  24. Once glue on fabric has dried, attach fabric to popsicle sticks. Put a thin line of glue onto the back of an embellished popsicle stick and one side of a plain popsicle stick. Sandwich short side of the fabric between glued sides of the popsicle sticks. Repeat for all short sides.
  25. Tie a short piece of yarn around the ends of the top popsicles sticks to hang.
