Yellow, Gray and White Quilt

SUPPLIES & TOOLS:

  • 2 1/8 yds white cotton fabric
  • 1/4 yd each of 3 light gray fabrics
  • 1/4 yd each of 2 medium gray fabrics
  • 1/8 yd of a dark gray fabric
  • 1/4 yd each of 2 different yellow prints
  • 1/2 yd for binding
  • 3 yds backing
  • 50"x 60" piece of batting
  • Rotary cutter, ruler & mat
  • Basic sewing supplies
  • Sewing machine
  • Iron & pressing surface

DIRECTIONS:

Note: Finished quilt size is 46"x 50". Sew with accurate 1/4" seams. Read all instructions before starting.
  1. For Quilt: Cut the following strips from 1 1/8 yd of white fabric:
  2. two 5"x WOF
    two 4"x WOF
    one 3 1/2"x WOF
    two 3"x WOF
    two 2 1/2"x WOF
    one 2"x WOF
  3. Cut a total of 7 strips from the light grays:
  4. 2 1/2"x WOF
    cut a total of 3 strips from the medium grays: 2 1/2"x WOF
    cut 1 strip from dark gray: 2 1/2"x WOF

  5. Cut off selvage and trim strips to the same length.
  6. To print the diagrams, click on the "Download Project PDF" button (above). Following diagram A, sew strips together. Change direction when stitching each strip so they do not bow. Press.
  7. For Lattice: From remaining yard of white fabric cut lengthwise: 19 - 5 ¼" x 2 ¼" strips; 1 - 16" x 2 ½" strip; 4 - 22 ¾" x 2 ½" strips; 1 - 29 ½" x 2 ½" strip; 1 - 9 ½" x 2 ½" strip.
  8. Cut thirteen 5 1/4" squares from the 2 yellow prints.
  9. Follow Diagram B for placement of 2 1/4"x 5 1/4" strips to squares. Press.
  10. Sew side strips following Diagram B. When sewing the 7 inner corners (marked with dots on diagram), stop stitching 1/4" from edge.
  11. Carefully turn under 1/4" all around and press.
  12. Measure about 2/3 across quilt top and mark from top to bottom.
  13. Line up lattice 'on point' along the 2/3 measure line and crop at a 45 degree angle at top and bottom to fit the length of quilt. Pin in place.
  14. Topstitch close to left edge to secure it to quilt top as shown in Diagram C.
  15. Flip quilt top over and carefully trim it 1/4" from the stitching line.
  16. Put cut piece of quilt top to right side of lattice as shown in diagram. Move lattice to overlap quilt top about 1". Line up so stripes on both pieces are evenly spaced across. Pin and topstitch lattice close to right edge. Flip to wrong side and trim quilt back to 1/4" from stitching.
  17. Sandwich top, batting and backing.
  18. Quilt and bind as desired.
