BENCH CUSHIONS

SUPPLIES & TOOLS:

  • Pkg 2"x 22"x 22" pieces of foam: two pieces per cushion
  • Scissors
  • Velvet fabric, gray
  • 1/4" piping cord
  • Straight pins
  • Hot glue gun/glue sticks
  • Thread
  • Sewing machine

DIRECTIONS:

  1. Glue the two pieces of foam together.
  2. Using your scissors, cut out the desire square or rectangle shape for your bench cushions.
  3. Lay the cushion onto the fabric with right sides of fabric together and cut out rectangles or squares of the fabric to be about 1" bigger than the foam shapes.
  4. For the piping, cut out 1" strips of the velvet fabric as long as the perimeter of the cushion. You may need to sew strips of fabric together to get the length of the perimeter. Make sure to make the fabric and cord about 2" longer than you need it. You will trim it once it is sewn into the cushion. You will need to cut fabric to make two fabric-covered cords.
  5. Fold the strip of fabric around the piping cord at the beginning of the cord.
  6. With your zipper/piping foot on the sewing machine, sew right against the fabric-covered piping cord, folding the fabric around the cord as you sew. You will end up with two long fabric-covered cords.
  7. Repeat step 5-6 to make another fabric-covered cord.
  8. Lay the foam cushion on a flat surface. Lay the fabric piece centered on top of the foam cushion. Take the fabric covered piping and pin it to the fabric close to the foam cushion with the raw seam going towards the ceiling.
  9. Take a piece of fabric the width of the cushion plus 1" for seam allowance. Pin it to the top piece of fabric with the right side facing into the cushion with the piping already sewn to the top piece.
  10. Sew the side seam to the top piece of fabric with the piping on it.
  11. Flip the cushion over with the fabric. Add the second piece of fabric and piping as you did the first piece. Do not sew it completely around the cushion. Leave an 8" opening on the backside of the cushion. You will need an opening to pull the cushion out and then invert the finished cushion cover right side out.
  12. Insert the cushion into the newly-made cover. Fold over the open side seam and hand-stitch it closed.
  13. Repeat these steps to make each additional cushion.
