Intermediate 1-2 Hours
SUPPLIES & TOOLS:
  • Favorite pie crust
  • Favorite pie filling
  • Rolling pin
  • Pie pans
  • Various small cookie cutters (such as leaf-shaped cutters)
  • Sharp knife to make precise cuts if needed
  • Food coloring: olive green and dark pink (used for Berry and Matcha pie)

DIRECTIONS:
  1. Roll out your favorite pie dough and fit to the bottom of the pan
  2. Mix together pie filling and pour into pan containing bottom crust
  3. Pick a top crust design and begin planning how to create it
  4. For all designs, begin by evenly rolling out pie dough
  5. For cookie cutter designs, start cutting your desired shape out of the pie dough
  6. After you have cut out your desired number of shapes, begin arranging them on the top of your pie
  7. Continue placing shapes until your desired look is achieved, cutting more shapes along the way as necessary
  8. You could also use a knife to create a more traditional crust design after initially rolling out the pie dough for the top layer
  9. For a traditional crust, cut a number of strips in your desired thickness
  10. After you have cut out your desired number of strips, begin assembling them on top of the pie by pressing the ends of the strips on the outer crust of the pie
  11. Your chosen design will determine how to weave or twist each strip of dough
  12. Once your design is complete, bake for 10-15 minutes or until golden brown.

JOANN HACKS:
  • Use cookie cutters to cut extra dough to make accent pieces for the tops of your pies
  • Extra accent pieces can be added to the top of pies with a dab of water before baking
  • Gel food coloring can be mixed directly into dough for a marbled effect
  • Chocolate Chip Cookies can also be made in mini pie pans following your favorite cookie recipe. Once cooled, the cookie pie can be decorated with frosting
Rated 1 out of 5 by from Insulting!!! I was hoping to learn how to cut designs. The skill level is intermediate, but it should list a few examples at the least!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Directions? I'm not sure what this is, but it DEFINITELY isn't "How-to make fall pies". The only thing pie-related is the awesome composite photo of nine different (pre-baked) pies. I was really hoping for actual DIRECTIONS on how to creates some of the baked goods shown in the picture...not just "use cookie cutters"
