Flannel Blankets 3 Ways

BEGINNER FLANNEL BLANKET

SUPPLIES & TOOLS:

• Woven plaid flannel, 2 yds
• Solid fleece, 2 yds
• Thread to match
• Sewing shears
• Rotary Cutter, Cutting Mat, Ruler
• Long straight pins
• Sewing Machine
• Sewing Machine Needles & Hand sewing needles

DIRECTIONS:

1. Prewash & dry flannel. Press flannel carefully to remove any creases or wrinkles.
2. Open folded flannel. Use sewing shears to cut flannel in single layer along plaid lines: 45" x 60".
3. Use rotary blade, cutting mat and clear ruler to cut fleece" 45" x 60".
4. Determine the right side of the fleece by noticing which direction the selvage curls. It curls toward the right side.
5. Place the two fabrics RST (Right Sides Together). Pin around all four edges.
6. Stitch 1/2" seam around all four edges, secure stitching at beginning and end. Leave an opening for turning the blanket.
7. Carefully trim the four corners and then turn right side out.
8. Fold & pin the opening closed. Hand stitch the opening using a slip stitch or small overcast stitch.

JOANN Hacks:

• Cut plaids in single layer. Cut along the plaid lines to insure the best looking plaid blanket (not crooked)
• Fleece stitching: use a longer stitch length and narrow zigzag stitch.

INTERMEDIATE FLANNEL BLANKET

SUPPLIES & TOOLS:

• Green and navy plaid flannel, 2yds
• Navy faux fur, 2yds
• Thread to match
• Sewing shears
• Rotary Cutter, Cutting Mat, Ruler
• Long straight pins
• Sewing Machine
• Sewing Machine Needles & Hand sewing needles

DIRECTIONS:

1. Prewash & dry flannel. Press flannel carefully to remove any creases or wrinkles.
2. Open folded flannel. Use sewing shears to cut flannel in single layer along plaid lines: 45" x 60".
3. Mark on the backing of the fur the appropriate line using straight edge & chalk or other marking tool. Use sewing shears to cut carefully along the marked lines. Cut just through the backing and avoid cutting the fur. This will maintain the natural look of the fur on the front.
4. Trim/Shear a scant 1/2" of the fur with scissors within the seam allowance around all sides. This removes bulk.
5. Place the two fabrics RST (Right Sides Together). Pin around all four edges. Pin often. Fur is slippery.
6. Use a slightly longer stitch length. Stitch 1/2" seam around all four edges, secure stitching at beginning and end. Leave an opening for turning the blanket.
7. Turn. Poke corners out.
8. Fold in & pin the opening closed. Hand stitch the opening using a slip stitch or small overcast stitch.

JOANN Hacks:

• Use long ball point pins.
• Faux Fur is messy. Wear an apron. Have a wastebasket & vacuum handy. Shake the cut fur outside or into a wastebasket.
• Stitch one side at a time. Remove the blanket from the machine. Check to see if fabric has shifted and adjust if needed. Begin to stitch the next side. BE PATIENT.

FLANNEL BLANKET WITH TRIM

SUPPLIES & TOOLS:

• Gray & white plaid flannel, 2 yds
• Navy fleece, 2 yds
• Navy pom trim, 6 yds.
• Thread to match
• Sewing shears
• Rotary Cutter, Cutting Mat, Ruler
• Long straight pins
• Sewing Machine
• Sewing Machine Needles & Hand sewing needles

DIRECTIONS:

1. Prewash & dry flannel. Press flannel carefully to remove any creases or wrinkles.
2. Open folded flannel. Use sewing shears to cut flannel in single layer along plaid lines: 45" x 60".
3. Determine the right side of the fleece by noticing which direction the selvage curls. It curls toward the right side.
4. Use rotary blade, cutting mat and clear ruler to cut fleece" 45" x 60".
5. Carefully stitch Pom Pom trim on the right side of the plaid around all four sides. Match edge of trim with edge of flannel. Check that trim is not twisted.
6. With RST (Right Sides Together) sandwich the trim inside the flannel and fleece. Pin and stitch a 1/2" seam on all four sides. Leave an opening for turning. Secure stitching at beginning and end.
7. Carefully trim corners to reduce bulk. Turn RSO. Poke out corners. Fold in opening. Pin. Handsew opening closed.

JOANN Hacks:

Pom pom trim:

• Prewash trim similar to the prewash of the flannel unless it is a polyester or other synthetic fiber.
• Use sharpest needle. Begin new projects with a new needle.
• Use zigzag stitch similar width to flat edge of pom pom trim to attach trim to flannel. Flat edge of trim should be minimal 1/4" wide
• Baste or zig zag onto the right side of fabric, matching edge of trim with edge of fabric. Carefully stitch along all sides, being careful trim is not twisted.

Fleece:


• The selvage of fleece curls toward the right side.
• Choose a rotary cutter with sharp blades for the cleanest cut.
• Begin project with a new needle.
• Use a longer stitch length, nearly basting length.
• Avoid ironing fleece. It will burn. If fleece needs ironed use a low heat and press cloth. Otherwise finger press seams.
• Stitches are difficult to remove: stitch slowly and carefully.
