SUPPLIES & TOOLS:

  • At least 12"x 9" cotton fabric
  • 12"x 9" lightweight fusible interfacing
  • 1/4" elastic
  • Basic sewing supplies
  • PDF pattern in child's size

DIRECTIONS:

  1. Download the pattern by clicking “download PDF" below Print Description on the right. Use youth small size pattern.
  2. Cut one pattern piece, on the fold, out of the cotton fabric and lightweight interfacing.
  3. Apply fusible interfacing to wrong side of cotton fabric using an iron.
  4. Fold fabric right sides together, matching 9" (8") sides.
  5. Sew along the 9 (8)" side, using 1/4" seam allowance and leaving a space 3" wide in the center to turn mask right side out.
  6. Cut 2 pieces of elastic 7" long. Insert into the corners of the two open ends of the mask and pin into place. Sew across sides, backstitching well over the elastic, to secure the elastic in place.
  7. Turn mask right side out and press seams flat.
  8. Using pattern as a guide, fold up 3 pleats on each side, making sure the pleats are folded in the same direction. Pin into place.
  9. Top-stitch around the entire mask, securing the pleats and closing the opening.

JOANN HACKS:

  • Substitute elastic with four 16" Fabric Ties at each corner.
  • Elastic can be adjusted for size of child's face.
  • Any light-medium weight, non-woven interfacing is appropriate for this project.

SUPPLIES & TOOLS:

  4. Fuse interfacing to main four pieces of mask.
  5. Match two pieces of fabric mask right sides together, and sew the outer curve using 3/8" seam allowance.
  6. Repeat with remaining two pieces.
  7. Open pieces and press both seam allowances to the right.
  8. Top stitch down the seam allowance, about 1/4" from the seam.
  9. Cut two 6" pieces elastic.
  10. Cut two 1"x 11" of fabric for cover of elastic.
  11. Fold fabric in half lengthwise and sew a scant 1/4" seam on outside edge.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Poorly sized Even though the pattern printed correctly this wouldn't fit a 2 year old child. As others have stated, the directions are incomplete and confusing.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Disparities in directions, pictures, patterns - The pleated mask is pictured with elastic guides on the ends, but the directions have the elastic sewn in on the ends with no elastic guides mentioned in the directions. + The pattern measurements for the pleated mask are right on the money. I downloaded the pattern before printing. -The fitted mask pattern measurements are 1/4" off. As before, I downloaded the pattern before printing it. - The pattern for fitted mask states that 1/4 seam allowance included. Nope. Even with 1/4 inch seams, the masks are tiny and very difficult to put together. Hmmm, so everything from cutting to sewing is 1/4" off, twice.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Three different measurement for elastic!!! The directions first say to cut two pieces, 7" of elastic on line six of the directions. Then under the Directions for 1/2 seam allowance it says to cut two 6" pieces of elastic, then after this in the directions under this area it says to cut two 4" pieces. Seriously. mess up.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from NOT to scale I printed the pattern landscape position, "100%" on scale on my computer. When I measure it against my ruler and quilting board: your inch marks are less than an inch, more like 6/8 or 7/8. It's clear that these patterns and instructions have been churned out to meet a need (some instructions have missing words and steps!), but let's not also forget a need for precision. If you really want to be helpful, do it right, not FAST.
