SUPPLIES & TOOLS:
  • Fabric (Have a few extra test swatches to get desired color.)
  • Dye
  • Pot/water
  • Area to hang fabric to dry (shower/outdoors)

DIRECTIONS:
  1. Prepare the fabric as instructed by the dye.
  2. Bring water to a boil. Figure out how high you want the dye to come and wet the fabric up to that point. Set the fabric aside.
  3. Add the dye to the water and allow the dye to dissolve. Follow the directions on the dye for the ratio of water to dye. For the Ombre affect you will want to first create a dye bath for the darkest color. Use your test fabric swatches to test the dye until you have your desired color. Add more water to lighten the color or more dye to darken. ?Once the desired color is met, make sure you turn off the heat and move the pan to the sink or work area.
  4. Dip the wet end of the fabric into the dye bath. Do not dip the entire way in since an ombre effect is being created. Only dip the portion that is to be the darkest. Once the fabric has been dyed to the desired color, set the fabric aside. Add water to the dye bath to dilute the color. Test the color with swatches and then proceed by dip dying the dyed end back into the dye bath, this time dipping it farther into the dye to create the next shade. Continue until the desired gradient has been achieved.
  5. The color will fade slightly when it is rinsed out, so make sure to take that into account when deciding the color. Once the dye gradient is complete, hang the fabric to dry. Hang with the dark side down so the drips drip off the fabric not down the front.
