DIRECTIONS:

Small, Medium and Large baskets: cut Cotton Duck cloth patterns folded on long measurement. Cut one stabilizer for each. Cut one dowel for each.
Small: 2 @ 6 1/4"x 8" (6 1/4"x 16" finish size). Cut out folded corners 1 3/4" up from folded edge and 1 3/4" in from outer edges. Stabilizer 3 1/2" square. Dowel 3 1/2".
Medium: 2 @ 7"x 9" (7"x 18" finish size). Cut out folded corners 2" up from folded edge and 2" in from outer edges. Stabilizer 4" square. Dowel 4".
Large: 2 @ 7 3/4"x 10" (7 3/4"x 20" finish size). Cut out folded corners 2 1/4" up from folded edge and 2 1/4" in from outer edges. Stabilizer 4 1/2" square. Dowel 4 1/2".
  1. Sew together the short sides (tops of baskets) 1/2" seam allowance. This will create three loops. Turn and steam press seams. Center the stabilizer in the middle cut-out section (this will be the bottom of the basket). Press to secure in place.
  2. Center one dowel inside the loop by the seam in one end. Secure in place with stitching on all three sides.
  3. Straight stitch 1/4" from edges by seams.
  4. Zigzag stitch around all raw edges (sides) to prevent fraying.
  5. Lay on a flat surface and use the chip brush to paint one side of each basket white.
  6. When paint is completely dry, apply blue tape to block off areas that will remain white. Other areas will be painted black.
  7. Small - two rectangles: Tape lines up with top and bottom edges of panel without the dowel. Tape sides lining the tape up with the bottom of the basket raw edges. For the center rectangle lay one piece of tape in the center of the first rectangle. Cut out the center with an X-Acto® knife to leave a 1/4" rectangle of tape.
  8. Medium - one horizontal stripe: Use four small cuts of tape to locate the band 2" up from the raw cuts on both sides of the basket. Use these tape pieces as the width of the black stripe. Lay tape from side to side of the basket above and below the small cuts of tape. Remove the small cuts of tape.
  9. Large - plaid: Lay 3 small cuts of tape lined up with the top finished edges of the basket. Use these as a guide to lay a full strip of tape from side to side of the basket. Continue this down to the bottom square of the basket. There will be alternating 3/4" tape and 3/4" white spaces. Remove small cut pieces.
  10. Paint black.
  11. The large basket will need to dry completely prior to taping a second time for vertical stripes. Center the first tape on the top edge of one side to the top edge of the other side of the basket to have a balanced pattern.

  12. Add grommets.
  13. Read manufacturer's directions. Apply below dowel as close as possible. Place the white finished side of the grommets to the unpainted side of the basket.

  14. Small: Center one
    Medium: two @ 1 1/2" from center (3" apart).
    Large: two @ 1 7/8" from center (3 3/4" apart).

  15. Turn painted sides of baskets together. Line up the top, seamed edges and sew sides together using a 1/4" seam allowance. Start stitching at the top edges. Pull up raw edges of bottom panel and sew to bottom edges of sides using a 1/4" seam allowance and folding the side seams toward the back (side with the dowel).
  16. Turn the baskets right side out.
  17. Use the Command hooks to hang.

JOANN Hacks:

  • Acrylic paint may be used to paint the baskets, but due to the manipulation of the fabric the paint will have a distressed, aged look.
  • When stitching the sides and the bottom work slowly to keep the small areas lined up. Backstitch over the beginning and end of each run.
