Quilted Envelope Backed Pillowcases

SUPPLIES & TOOLS:

  • 1/2 yd fabric for envelope backing
  • 1/2 yd per fabric used in each quilted top
  • Sewing machine
  • Ruler
  • Iron
  • Tailor's chalk or marking utensil
  • Basic sewing supplies

DIRECTIONS:

    (Top A)
  1. Cut sixteen 6" squares out of assorted fabrics (1/4" seam allowance included).
  2. Make four quilt blocks by sewing four squares right-side together (sewing two sets of two makes this easier). Press seams to one side.
  3. Sew four quilt blocks right-sides together in sets of two.
  4. True up piece to 20" square.

  5. (Top B):
  6. Cut sixteen 3"x 6" strips out of assorted fabrics (1/4" seam allowance included).
  7. Sew four strips long, right-sides together to create one quilt block. Press seams to one side.
  8. Repeat to create four quilt blocks. Sew four quilt blocks right-sides together in sets of two.
  9. True up piece to 20" square.
    (Top C):
  10. Cut four 11" squares out of assorted fabrics (1/4" seam allowance included).
  11. Pin two squares right-sides together. With a ruler, mark diagonal line across square, corner-to-corner.
  12. Sew a scant 1/8" on each side of diagonal mark.
  13. Cut on marked line and press seam to one side.
  14. With two pieces already sewn and pressed: pin squares right-sides together, with seams matching and colors facing opposite sides.
  15. Draw diagonal line through square on opposite side of seam. Sew a scant 1/8" on each side of line and cut on marked one. Press seams to one side.
  16. Repeat process one more time with two more 11" squares to create four quilt blocks.
  17. Sew four quilt blocks right-sides together in sets of two.
  18. True up piece to 20" square.

  19. (A, B & C):
  20. Cut two 20"x 13" rectangles out of backing fabric (1/2" seam allowance included)
  21. Finish one long end of each rectangle with 1/4" hem.
  22. Sew quilted top to two back pieces, matching long, side seams and overlapping finished edges of back pieces.
  23. Sew top and bottom of pillow case
  24. For boxed corners: when pillowcase is inside-out, match seams at corner and sew 1/2" in from each corner edge in a straight line. Repeat for all corners.
