SUPPLIES & TOOLS:

  • Key rings
  • Cake yarn
  • Scissors
  • Cardboard
  • Tape
  • Colored cardstock
  • Markers

DIRECTIONS:

  1. Divide cake yarn into smaller balls of yarn by color.
  2. Cut cardboard to 4"x 6".
  3. Cut a piece of yarn about 3' long. Tape at the corners to a 4" side of the cardboard.
  4. Start wrapping yarn around the cardboard piece long ways. Change color of yarn every 15-20 times around. Continue wrapping until you’ve gone around the cardboard about 80 times.
  5. Remove tape from the first piece of yarn and use it to tie a double knot at the top of the bundle of yarn wrapped around the cardboard.
  6. To make a loop at the top of the tassel, take both pieces of yarn used to make the double knot and knot them together using a forward knot for about 1 1/2". To make a forward knot, take the left yarn and cross it over the right so that it looks like a number 4. Pull the left yarn tail under the right yarn and up through the loop formed between the two yarns. Slide the knot up the right yarn until it meets the double knot. Pull the knot tight. Continue making this knot until the knotted section is about 1 1/2" long.
  7. Slide the bundle of yarn off of the cardboard. Snip apart loops at the bottom of the bundle to form the tassel. Divide the two halves of the tassel so the underside of the double knot at the top is showing.
  8. Slide a key ring onto the knot section at the top of the tassel. Wrap the two ends of this yarn in opposite directions under the tassel top and tie on the inside.
  9. Holding tassel by the key ring, smooth down all the yarn pieces so that they are going in one direction. Cut a new piece of yarn about 14" long. Tie around the whole bundle of yarn, about 1 1/4" down from the top. Secure with a double knot and blend yarn ends into the rest of the yarn.
  10. Use scissors to trim any uneven ends from the tassel.
  11. From the paper, cut a key shape with a tab at the top for attaching to the key ring. Write message on the front and a to/from on the back before attaching to the key ring.
