How to Sew Varies Sizes of Pillows with Piping

SUPPLIES & TOOLS:

  • 2/3 yd - 18" sq. pillow/piping for 1 pillow
  • 1/2 yd - 16" sq. pillow/piping for 1 pillow
  • 1/3 yd - 12"x 16" pillow/piping for 1 pillow
  • 1/2 yd - 16" sq. with invisible zipper/piping
  • 2-3 pkgs - 3/16" piping
  • 18" , 16" 12"x 16" pillow forms
  • 1 - 16" invisible zipper
  • 1 - Zipper foot or invisible zipper foot
  • Basic sewing supplies

DIRECTIONS:

12"x 16" pillow

  1. Cut 13"x 17" for front and two 13" x 10" for back.
  2. Cut 65"x 2 1/4" strips for piping.
  3. Sew strips together and make piping.
  4. Sew piping around outside of front.
  5. Sew a hem along one 13" side of each of the back pieces.
  6. With RST, sew back to front, overlapping back two pieces.
  7. Turn and insert pillow.

18" pillow

  1. Cut one 19" square for top and two 19"x 10" for back.
  2. Cut 80"x 2 1/4" strips for piping.
  3. Sew strips together and make piping.
  4. Sew a hem along one 19" side of each of back pieces.
  5. With RST, sew back to front, overlapping back two pieces.
  6. Turn and insert pillow.

16" pillow

  1. Cut one 17" square and two 17"x 11" for back.
  2. Cut 70"x 2 1/4" strips for piping.
  3. Sew strips together and make piping.
  4. Sew piping around outside of front.
  5. Sew a hem along one 17" side of each of back pieces.
  6. With RST sew back to front, overlapping back two pieces.
  7. Turn and insert pillow form.

16" pillow with piping and invisible zipper

  1. Cut one 17" square for front.
  2. Cut one 3"x 17" for top of back and one 16"x 17" for bottom back.
  3. Sew invisible zipper to top and bottom of back pieces, following manufacturers instructions.
  4. Cut 70"x 2 1/4" strips for piping.
  5. Sew strips together and make piping.
  6. Sew piping around outside of front.
  7. With RST, sew back to front.
  8. Turn and insert pillow form.
