SUPPLIES & TOOLS:
- White Cotton T-Shirt
- Rit® All-Purpose Powder Dye: Scarlet, Royal Blue (or your favorite colors)
- Ice (Enough to completely cover your fabric)
- Cooling Rack
- Storage Bin or Pan to Catch Dye
- Spoon
- Rubber Gloves
- Paper Towels
- Plastic Table Cover
- Rit ColorStay Dye Fixative (Recommended)
DIRECTIONS:
- Pre-wash T-shirt, rinse and leave wet.
- Cover table with plastic and gather your supplies.
- Lay out damp T-shirt flat on your work surface and completely crumple into a small, flat ball. Twisting material produces a nice watercolor type pattern. Place crumpled fabric on top of drying rack, over the plastic tub (to catch dripping dye).
- Cover fabric completely with ice. Different ice sizes will yield different patterns.
- Open dye packages. Use spoon to sprinkle dye on the ice. Sprinkle dye as you might sprinkle salt on food. Use very little dye. (A little goes a long way.) For this project we used Scarlet and Royal Blue powder dye.
- Let the ice melt completely through the fabric.
- Recommended: Use Rit ColorStay Dye Fixative immediately after dyeing and before washing, following instructions on bottle. It enhances the color, increases color retention and prevents dye from bleeding into the white areas.
- Wash in warm water with a mild detergent, rinse and dry.
