SUPPLIES & TOOLS:
- Liquitex Basics Acrylic colors: Titanium White, Blue Gray, Deep Green Permanent, Light Olive Green, Burnt Sienna, Burnt Umber
- Liquitex Gloss Gel Medium
- Liquitex Freestyle Small Painting Knife, Size 11
- 8"x 10" Canvas (pre-primed)
- Palette Paper
DIRECTIONS:
- Protect work surface with plastic or paper (recommended) and assemble supplies and tools.
- Working directly on the canvas, add 2 tbsp of Blue Gray paint to the top of the canvas, and 2 tbsp of Green Deep Permanent to the bottom of the canvas.
- Add several pea sized dots of Titanium White to the top, middle, and bottom of the canvas.
- Using the palette knife, spread the blue paint eventually to completely cover the top of the canvas, then repeat the process with the green paint, blending the two colors when they meet in the middle of the canvas (the white paint will create clouds, so try not to over mix).
- Tip: when switching to a new color, wipe off excess paint on a paper towel/rag .
- Since this is the background, don't stress about it being perfect! More white, blue, or green can always be added to achieve desired effect.
- To the palette paper, add 2 tbsp of each: Burnt Sienna, Burnt Umber, Green Deep Permanent and Light Olive Green.
- Scoop 1/4 of a cup of Gloss Gel medium onto palette.
- Add a quarter of the Gloss Gel to each color on palette and mix thoroughly.
TREE TRUNKS
- Scoop a pea sized amount of Burnt Sienna mix onto the palette knife.
- Starting at the bottom of the canvas, drag the palette knife up vertically to create lines. Don't go all the way to the top, and vary lengths for an organic look.
- To create thinner lines, turn the palette knife on its side.
- Repeat alternating with Burnt Umber mix until you have a desired amount of lines (tree trunks).
BRANCHES
- Scoop a pea sized amount of Green Deep Permanent mix on to the palette knife.
- Holding the palette knife horizontally, tap it against the canvas to create branches. Repeat until half of your Green Deep Permanent mix is used up.
- To mix a darker green, add a pea sized amount of Burnt Umber to remaining Green Deep Permanent mix.
- Continue adding branches, varying the amount of paint on the palette knife to create bigger/ smaller branches.
- Create a mid-toned green by adding a pea size amount of Green Deep Permanent to the Light Olive-Green mix.
- Mix leftover colors on the palette to create different shades of green (adding brown to greens will create more earthy tones).
- Repeat until you have the desired number of branches. Mix up more paint if necessary.
SNOW
- Spread a large dollop of Titanium White across the bottom of the painting to create a snow bank, adding green in some places to create dimension.
- Add small highlights to the tops of tree branches using Titanium White.
- Finishing Touches
- Review the painting and add more paint until you are happy with the colors and textures.
- Place your painting in a safe spot and allow three days to dry completely.
