SUPPLIES & TOOLS:
  • Project foam - 3'x 6'
  • PolyFil batting - 3'x 6'
  • Assorted blizzard fleece - one piece that is 3'x 6', one that is 3 1/2'x 6 1/2', ten that are 1/3 yd each
  • Numbers template
  • Fabric glue
  • Sharpie® marker
  • Basic sewing supplies

DIRECTIONS:
  1. Layer the Batting on top of the Foam, use fabric glue around the edges to hold the layers in place and set aside.
  2. Cut ten 10"x 10" squares of fleece and use the leftover fleece to make the numbers 1 - 10. Print numbers from the template (enlarge number template by 200%), cut out, and trace onto the fleece using the permanent marker - you will flip the ink side of the paper number facedown on the fleece so that the traced marker line will end up on the back side of the fleece number.
  3. Position numbers into place on the squares, pin, and sew into place on the square. You can clean up the numbers by trimming the fleece down to the stitching with scissors, being careful not to cut through the stitching or through the fleece underneath.
  4. Position all the squares on the 3'x 6' fleece, pin, and sew into place.
  5. Position the 3'x 6' fleece with the number squares onto the foam and batting, and baste the edges in place. Optional: sew around all the squares again at this point to get them to puff out from the batting; then trim the fleece to the stitching.
  6. Lay the 3 1/2'x 6 1/2' piece of fleece flat and set the mat right side up and centered on top of it.
  7. Fold the long sides on top of the mat, pin and sew down the side, about 3/4" from the edge; carefully trim off the excess fleece to the stitching.
  8. Fold the short sides on top of the mat, pin and, starting from the long side stitching, sew down the side, about 3/4" from the edge. Stop when you get to the other long side stitching, keep your needle in place, and pivot towards the corner, and sew to the corner.
  9. Go back to the first corner and sew from the beginning of the short side stitching to the corner. Carefully trim off the excess fleece to the stitching.

JOANN HACKS:
  • Use a walking foot, a needle for knits, and a longer stitch to help sew the fleece onto the foam and batting.
  • Alternatively, this whole project could be done completely without sewing by simply following all the cutting directions and fabric gluing into place; follow the fabric glue dry times.
Rated 1 out of 5 by from Cute, but questionable safety When I first started reading I thought this would be okay because the foam might have some gripping power on the floor. But then I saw that you put fleece on the back to finish it. The fleece has no traction and would easily slip when kids are playing. I would suggest a rug grip mat under it to insure safety. Possibly using the grippers that are used on footy pajama feet.
